EXCITING NEW FILM FESTIVAL FOR HBCU STUDENTS COMES TO DETROIT
|
Posted By: Catalina Deossa on July 19, 2024 The Autumn Sun Film Festival is set to debut in Detroit on August 23rd and 24th, 2024, hosted at Newlab within the historic Michigan Central Station. Founded by filmmaker Bruce Clifton, the festival aims to showcase the talents of Black creatives from historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). The festival's inception stemmed from conversations Bruce Clifton had with educators at North Carolina A&T and Alabama State in 2018, where there was a noted need for additional platforms to showcase the works of student filmmakers. Given that Detroit is both Clifton's hometown and home to Pensole Lewis, the only HBCU focused on design, the city holds special significance for this event. The festival will feature 25 finalists selected from a pool of 100 filmmakers representing 102 HBCUs, all vying for a $10,000 prize. Beyond the competitive aspect, Autumn Sun aims to foster community among Black filmmakers and expand its scope to include programming for all Black filmmakers aged 18-30 in future editions. Detroit's rich cultural history, particularly in producing pioneers of the arts and civil rights movements, makes it an ideal setting for such an event. Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield highlighted the historical role of HBCUs in cultivating African-American leaders and their contributions to arts and justice. The festival not only celebrates Black cinema but also aims to contribute to Detroit's cultural landscape and honor its legacy as a center of innovation and artistic expression. With plans to establish the Autumn Sun Film Festival as an annual fixture in Detroit, the event promises to be a significant addition to the city's cultural calendar, emphasizing diversity, creativity, and the power of storytelling in African-American communities.
