SURGING ENROLLMENT REFLECTS STRONG HBCU SPIRIT
|
Posted By: Catalina Deossa on July 19, 2024 The article explores the myriad challenges facing Black Americans today, exacerbated in part by attempts in Florida to rewrite Black history. Despite these adversities, the resilience and success of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) were highlighted at the annual HBCU Picnic hosted by Florida Memorial University on July 13. The event, which drew hundreds of attendees from across the country, celebrated the cultural and educational contributions of HBCUs amidst a backdrop of increasing admissions. Abeo Manning, a Howard University alumna, noted that heightened awareness and a growing sense of alienation among students, particularly in states like Florida where efforts to diminish Black history are evident, have driven more individuals to seek refuge and support at HBCUs. Manning highlighted Howard University's record-high numbers of applicants and graduates from their School of Health Sciences as a testament to this trend. Despite comprising only 3% of post-secondary institutions, HBCUs educate 9% of all Black college students in America. Recent data from the National Center for Education Statistics revealed a 7% increase in HBCU enrollment between 2020 and 2023, with some institutions reporting even higher gains, such as a 30% rise in student numbers. This surge isn't limited to Black students alone; there has also been a significant rise in Hispanic student enrollment at HBCUs, as reported by the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, indicating broader appeal and inclusivity. The allure of HBCUs lies not just in academic prowess but also in the supportive and culturally affirming environments they provide. Kayron Tucker, a second-year student at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), expressed how transferring to an HBCU after predominantly white institutions allowed him to connect deeply with his heritage and feel accepted for who he is. The social media campaign "#HBCUMatters" underscores the growing visibility and pride associated with HBCU attendance. Davica Williams, Executive Director of Advancement and Alumni Affairs at Florida Memorial University and an alumna herself, emphasized that HBCUs offer a holistic educational experience that nurtures personal, spiritual, and academic growth. She argued against the misconception that top-tier education is exclusive to Ivy League schools, asserting that HBCUs are equally capable of providing excellence across various disciplines. Despite their successes, HBCUs face ongoing financial challenges and unmet promises of government support. Williams acknowledged the resourcefulness and resilience within the Black community, highlighting how HBCUs consistently innovate and adapt to sustain their missions. She stressed the importance of continued government and philanthropic investment to ensure HBCUs can continue to thrive and produce future leaders in various fields. In conclusion, the article portrays HBCUs as not only educational institutions but also as pillars of cultural identity, resilience, and community support. Despite systemic obstacles, HBCUs continue to grow and evolve, offering invaluable opportunities for students seeking an inclusive and empowering educational experience.
