Delaware State President Credits Biden-Harris as Top Supporters of HBCUs
|
Posted By: Catalina Deossa on July 23, 2024 Tony Allen, the president of Delaware's only Historically Black College and University (HBCU), expressed profound gratitude to President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in a letter. He boldly asserted that no administration in the history of the United States has done more for HBCUs than the Biden-Harris administration. Allen's praise was substantiated by significant figures, citing approximately $17 billion in investments directed towards HBCUs during Biden's presidency. These investments encompassed emergency grants for students, operational support for campuses amidst the pandemic, infrastructure loan forgiveness benefiting 45 public and private HBCUs, and expanded academic capacity along with financial aid for students from low- and middle-income families. Additionally, Allen acknowledged the administration's swift response to bomb threats targeting HBCU campuses and their commitment to enhancing research opportunities, thereby bolstering their competitiveness as centers of innovation. Further underscoring their impact, Allen highlighted Biden's approval of nearly $160 billion in student debt cancellation, benefiting over 4.5 million borrowers, as well as significant increases to Pell Grants and reforms to Public Service Loan Forgiveness. The letter also paid tribute to Vice President Kamala Harris, herself a graduate of Howard University, another prominent HBCU. Allen praised Harris for her personal and substantive impact, echoing the sentiment that her leadership exemplifies the resilience and determination ingrained in the HBCU ethos. Beyond financial metrics, Allen emphasized the enduring significance of HBCUs, noting their pivotal role in producing a significant percentage of Black professionals across various fields, including law, medicine, and politics. He underscored that these institutions not only educate but also contribute significantly to the economy and society at large. In closing, Allen reflected on the historical resonance of Biden launching his first presidential campaign at Delaware State University, highlighting Biden's longstanding commitment to equity and opportunity. He affirmed that the administration's support for HBCUs is rooted in a belief in universal access and opportunity, irrespective of race, background, or identity. Ultimately, Allen's letter served as a testament to the transformative impact of the Biden-Harris administration on HBCUs and affirmed their critical role in shaping the future of Black education and leadership in America.
