Posted By: Catalina Deossa on July 23, 2024 CBS Sports is preparing to host the CBS Sports Classic: HBCU Showcase, a special men’s college basketball doubleheader that will highlight the experience and competitiveness of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Scheduled for December 28, the showcase will feature two exciting rivalry games hosted at prominent HBCU campuses. The event will commence with North Carolina A&T facing off against North Carolina Central (NCCU) at 2:00 PM ET. This matchup holds significant historical and regional importance, showcasing the spirited competition between two Division I HBCU programs in North Carolina. Known as the Eagle-Aggie showdown, it promises intense gameplay and a rich basketball tradition. Following the first game, at 4:00 PM ET, Howard University will visit Hampton University in another storied rivalry. The Howard-Hampton series is steeped in history, with both teams having competed fiercely on the basketball court over the years. This matchup not only highlights athletic rivalry but also celebrates the cultural and educational legacies of these institutions. Both games will be played on campus, enhancing the authentic experience by capturing the passion and energy of HBCU basketball. North Carolina A&T’s Corbett Sports Center and Hampton University’s Convocation Center will serve as vibrant backdrops for these high-profile matchups. CBS Sports aims to bring these games to a national audience, broadcasting them on the CBS Television Network and streaming them live on Paramount+. This national exposure underscores CBS’s commitment to promoting HBCU athletics and providing a platform for HBCU student-athletes, coaches, and fans to showcase their talents and passion on a larger scale. Dan Weinberg, Executive Vice President of Programming at CBS Sports, expressed excitement about highlighting these rivalries and the overall HBCU experience. He emphasized the event’s significance in celebrating the traditions, histories, and vibrant atmospheres unique to HBCUs. Directors of athletics from participating universities, including Hampton, Howard, North Carolina A&T, and North Carolina Central, have also expressed enthusiasm for the showcase. They view it as an opportunity to showcase their basketball programs, engage alumni and fans, and celebrate the cultural impact of HBCUs on both sports and society. CBS Sports Classic: HBCU Showcase promises to be a landmark event in college basketball, celebrating the competitive spirit, cultural heritage, and community pride of Historically Black Colleges and Universities across the nation.
