PLC Detroit Launches W.IN; A Product Creation Pathway to Empower and Uplift Women Across Various Industries

PLC Detroit Launches W.IN; A Product Creation Pathway to Empower and Uplift Women Across Various Industries
Posted By: Phyllis Caddell on July 24, 2024

PLC Detroit, the only historically Black college or university (HBCU) with a focus on design, will launch "Women In Industries” (W.IN @ PLC Detroit). A product creation pathway with a focus on women-centered design across industries. The initiative runs for four weeks from August 26 to September 20, 2024.

Echoing the vision of the college's founder, Dr. Violet T. Lewis, to empower and advance women's professional success, the new "W.IN @ PLC" initiative will be launched during the upcoming New Balance Certificate Program (IC) which marks an 8-year partnership between the college and New Balance that has proven highly successful.

The initiative will focus on PLC's three core design disciplines: Apparel Design, Color & Material Design, and Footwear Design. Design students will dive into a project centered on women in performance, designing for athletes, including the WNBA, leading the charge across sports categories.

Under the guidance of New Balance's visionary designers and PLC's industry expert educators, students will refine their design skills and develop essential competencies such as time management, professionalism, and leadership.

This hands-on learning experience will expose them to the thrilling world of sports design while allowing them to contribute to New Balance's rich legacy of innovation and excellence in athletic performance and artistic expression.

Dr. D'Wayne Edwards, PLC Detroit's president, is thrilled about this collaboration with New Balance. "By providing our students with unparalleled access and training from industry leaders, we're equipping the next generation of women designers and innovators with the tools to thrive."

To drive home the significance and understand the backstory, PLC will share the stories of students whose diverse backgrounds and design journeys reflect the essence of the certificate program. Through interviews, their motivating stories will be the collective representation of this leading-edge initiative.

Specifically, the initiative builds on PLC Detroit's founding mission to empower and advance women's professional success, while also strengthening its longstanding partnership with New Balance. By providing students unprecedented access and training from industry leaders, the "W.IN @ PLC Detroit" initiative is poised to make a significant impact on the careers of aspiring women designers.

PLC Detroit and New Balance will cover the student’s tuition and housing for the program.
