HBCU-LEEA BESTOWS LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD ON CONSORTIUM’S PUBLIC SAFETY DIRECTOR

Posted By: Catalina Deossa on July 26, 2024 In Hagerstown, Maryland, many local youths have limited knowledge about Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), a situation largely attributable to their rural surroundings and the lack of personal connections to these institutions. Asia Warren, a counselor at the YMCA, has recognized this significant gap in awareness and has proactively sought to address it. Warren, who serves as a mentor at the YMCA, has undertaken the mission of educating the children she interacts with about their higher education options, with a particular focus on HBCUs. She has observed that many of these young people are not familiar with HBCUs or their significance. This lack of familiarity is often due to the absence of direct exposure to HBCUs through family or community networks. To bridge this gap in understanding, Warren has begun initiating discussions about HBCUs with her mentees. She explains that these institutions are historically significant for Black students and encourages the children to explore these options further by speaking with their families. One of Warren’s mentees, Sage Bowers, provides a clear example of the positive impact of her efforts. Bowers' mother, who is an HBCU alumna, acknowledges the critical role that Warren’s mentorship plays in offering valuable information about secondary education options. According to Sia Pinkey, Bowers' mother, it is crucial for Black children to be aware of their educational opportunities, as this knowledge is vital for their future success—emotionally, spiritually, and financially. Warren’s efforts extend beyond her direct interactions with the children. She hopes that her work will serve as a catalyst for local officials to create additional educational resources and opportunities related to HBCUs for the youth in the area. Her ultimate goal is to ensure that children in Hagerstown are well-informed and empowered to make educated decisions about their future academic and career paths. By raising awareness about HBCUs, Warren aims to provide these young people with a broader perspective on their educational possibilities and inspire them to pursue their aspirations with greater confidence and clarity.
