INAUGURAL HBCU FAMILY DAY: A CELEBRATION OF MUSIC, FOOD, AND PERFORMANCES

This groundbreaking event was organized collaboratively by the Staten Island HBCU Experience and HBCU Night Inc. Its purpose was to celebrate and elevate the rich cultural heritage and traditions of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The day’s festivities were highlighted by captivating performances from the Divine 9, a prominent group representing various fraternities and sororities affiliated with HBCUs. These performances showcased the vibrant traditions, unity, and exuberant spirit of these Greek-letter organizations, creating a lively and engaging atmosphere that resonated with attendees of all ages. A notable highlight of the event was a special literary session led by Andres Martin, the founder and executive director of HBCU Night Inc. Martin conducted a read-aloud of his novel, HBCU Night, offering a unique opportunity for participants to connect with the HBCU experience through literature. His reading provided insightful reflections on the HBCU journey and contributed to the day's educational and cultural enrichment. In addition to the performances and literary activities, the event featured interactive elements designed to engage attendees more deeply. An arts and crafts table was set up, allowing families and community members to participate in creative activities. This hands-on component added a fun and inclusive dimension to the day’s celebrations, catering to participants of all ages and fostering a sense of community involvement. Tammy Greer, the founder and executive director of the Staten Island HBCU Experience, was also present at the event. She actively participated in the festivities and observed the various performances and activities, contributing to the day’s overall success and vibrancy. Overall, the HBCU Family Day served as a powerful platform for celebrating the legacy and impact of HBCUs. It provided an opportunity for the community to come together, honor the traditions of these institutions, and build lasting connections among attendees.
