PAINE COLLEGE AWARDED $2.2 MILLION FOR CAMPUS ENHANCEMENTS
|
Posted By: Catalina Deossa on July 29, 2024 Paine College in Augusta, Georgia, has been awarded a substantial grant of $2.2 million from the National Park Service to restore and upgrade three historic buildings on its campus. This funding is part of the Historic Preservation Fund’s HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) grant program, which recently allocated over $10 million to 15 projects across eight states. Paine College is notably one of only two institutions to receive funding for three separate projects. The grant will be used to restore Epworth Residential Hall and Belle-Bennett Residential Hall, both constructed in the early to mid-1900s, as well as Peters Campus Center, which serves as a central hub for student activities, including the cafeteria, offices, student lounge, and recreation areas. According to Paine College Board of Trustees Chairman Michael Thurmond, the restoration of these facilities is crucial for maintaining the vibrancy of campus life and ensuring that the college remains competitive in the higher education landscape. Thurmond expressed pride and satisfaction in being selected for this grant, emphasizing that the funding is a testament to the belief and support that high-level officials have in Paine College’s mission and future. He highlighted that the restoration of Peters Campus Center, in particular, is essential as it plays a central role in student life, helping to foster a thriving community atmosphere. Planning for the improvements is already in progress, and the college aims to move forward with the renovations as soon as the funds are available. Thurmond also expressed gratitude toward Senators Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock for their support in securing the grant. The college community is hopeful that this financial boost will not only preserve the historical integrity of its campus but also contribute to the institution’s long-term growth and success.
