A Weeklong Test in the Hot 2024 Ford Maverick

A Weeklong Test in the Hot 2024 Ford Maverick
Posted By: Randi Payton on August 01, 2024

I got behind the wheel of the hot-selling 2024 Ford Maverick, a compact pickup truck that benefits from the innovations of the midsize Ford Ranger and the full-size F-150. I was eager to see how the upgraded Maverick performed on city streets and freeways.

Selling has been off the roof since the Maverick was reintroduced as a compact pickup in 2022. Despite increasing its production in 2023 to meet the growing demand, you still may have to pre-order one, especially the hybrid version.
In April, sales were up by 83.5% versus its only competitor, the Hyundai Santa Cruz, whose sales dropped 18 percent. Ford sold 91,882 Mavericks last year, according to CarFigures.com.

In 2024, the Ford Maverick received significant upgrades, including a new turbocharged four-cylinder engine that is quick on its feet and a hybrid option. All-wheel drive is available for on- and off-road performance. Additionally, Ford has included more standard tech features across all trim levels, making the Maverick more appealing to tech-savvy drivers.

Ford attributes the Maverick’s success to its low cost, small size, innovative design, and fuel efficiency.

Unlike larger pickup trucks, the Maverick's cargo bed is short and cannot accommodate large hauls. However, an optional towing package can handle up to 4000 pounds. It has two rows that seat four adults.

Models/Pricing: Although I drove the 2024 model, prices for the 2025 Maverick offer four trim levels: The base XL ($27,890), XLT ($30,390), Lariat ($37,130), and Tremor ($41,390). The XL has basic features for budget-conscious buyers. The XLT, which I drove, sits in the middle of the range and offers a balanced mix of features, 17-inch wheels, cruise control, and more. The hybrid costs an additional $1500, and the AWD is also available. The Lariat trim comes with more luxury features and advanced technology.

Power: Under the hood, the Maverick is powered by a 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 250 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. This engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, delivering smooth and responsive shifts.

The new turbocharged engine is a significant upgrade, providing ample power for highway merging and off-road adventures.

In addition, the Maverick offers an optional 2.5-liter hybrid powertrain that combines a four-cylinder gasoline engine with an electric motor, producing a combined 191 horsepower. The hybrid comes with a continuously variable automatic (CVT). All wheel drive is optional.

Technology: While the 2024 models have an 8-inch display, the 2025 Mavericks have a standard 13.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system with onboard WiFi, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Additionally, the truck features Ford’s Co-Pilot360 suite of driver-assistance technologies, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking.

The Maverick's exterior design is modern and muscular, and its compact size makes it easy to maneuver. The Maverick is spacious and practical, with plenty of headroom and legroom for front and rear passengers. There are many storage places in the center console, door pockets, under the seats, and rear seats that can also fold up to create additional cargo space.

Fuel Economy: The 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine FWD model delivers an impressive EPA-estimated 23 city/30 highway mpg, while the AWD models average 22 city/29 highway. Meanwhile, the hybrid model gets an impressive 42 mpg city and 33 highway. The off-road Tremor model averages 26 mpg, according to the EPA.
