NORFOLK SOUTHERN AWARDS 100+ SCHOLARSHIPS TO CHILDREN OF STAFF
|
Posted By: Catalina Deossa on August 01, 2024 Norfolk Southern Corporation has announced the return of its Thoroughbred Scholars program, which offers substantial college scholarship opportunities for the children of its employees. This year, the program will provide over 100 scholarships. It includes 100 scholarships worth up to $10,000 each, distributed over four years, and three distinguished scholarships valued up to $40,000 each, also spread over four years. Since its inception in 2022, the program has awarded more than $1.4 million in scholarship funds. The recipients of this year’s scholarships come from 19 states across the Norfolk Southern network. Notably, 90 of these scholarships are designated for the children of field employees, including conductors, mechanics, engineers, and other frontline workers who are vital to the company’s operations. In addition to these, three special scholarships are awarded: one for a student pursuing higher education at a Historically Black College or University (HBCU), one for a student aiming to enter a STEM (science, technology, engineering, or mathematics) field, and one for a student who has demonstrated exceptional community leadership and volunteerism. The HBCU Scholar award is given to Makaya Stubbs from Douglasville, Georgia, who will study health education at Morgan State University. The STEM Scholar award is awarded to Abigail Lafon from Blacksburg, Virginia, who plans to pursue mechanical engineering at the University of Colorado Boulder. The Community Scholar award is presented to Faustina Barcena from Norcross, Georgia, who will study neuroscience and behavior at the University of Notre Dame. Each of these scholars is recognized for their outstanding academic achievements and dedication to their respective fields. The Thoroughbred Scholars program is administered by Scholarship America, a leading organization in managing scholarship and education support programs. Alan H. Shaw, President and CEO of Norfolk Southern, emphasized the company's commitment to supporting its employees and their families, noting that investing in education is a way to invest in the future of both the individuals and the communities they serve. Overall, the Thoroughbred Scholars program reflects Norfolk Southern’s dedication to fostering educational growth among the families of its employees, enhancing opportunities for the next generation, and reinforcing its commitment to the communities it serves.
