ENTERGY CORPORATION TO PROVIDE $20 MILLION IN FUNDING FOR HBCUS ACROSS FOUR STATES

ENTERGY CORPORATION TO PROVIDE $20 MILLION IN FUNDING FOR HBCUS ACROSS FOUR STATES
Posted By: Catalina Deossa on August 01, 2024

Entergy Corp. recently announced a substantial new investment of $20 million over the next decade to support Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) within its four-state service area, which includes Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. This commitment is part of Entergy’s broader initiative, The Power of Prosperity, designed to assist HBCU students and their families.

The $20 million will be allocated to various initiatives, including funding ten internships annually, sponsoring targeted recruitment events, and providing career readiness and skill training programs. Additionally, the investment will support twenty scholarships of $5,000 each year for the next ten years, along with competitive facility grants and endowment support for HBCUs in Entergy’s service area.

The funding will enhance existing Entergy programs that aid HBCU students, such as Single Stop, which connects students with financial aid referrals, case management, and counseling to help ensure timely graduation with minimal debt. Another supported program, Stackwell Capital, offers financial literacy coaching and $100 seeded investment accounts to HBCU students.

Marcus Brown, Vice President of Entergy, emphasized the company's unique responsibility as one of the few Fortune 500 companies based in New Orleans and Louisiana to make a significant impact on the community. He acknowledged Entergy’s previous $2.5 million donation to the United Negro College Fund but stressed that further action was necessary. He described the $20 million commitment as a “bold, new initiative to elevate and empower HBCU students and their families.”

The announcement was made at a reception on July 26 at the Hyatt Regency, attended by community leaders, HBCU presidents, and elected officials, including Xavier University of Louisiana President J. Reynold Verret, Southern University System President Dennis Shields, U.S. Representative Troy Carter, State Representative Delisha Boyd, and New Orleans District E City Councilman Oliver Thomas. Congressman Carter commended Entergy for stepping up and recognized the crucial role HBCUs have played in many individuals’ careers and opportunities.

Andrew Marsh, CEO of Entergy Corp., highlighted the importance of investing in future generations as a core component of the company’s strategy. John Hudson III, Entergy’s Senior Vice President of Regulatory and Government Affairs, announced that the first round of academic scholarships funded by this new commitment would be awarded in the fall.
