HOWARD UNIVERSITY HONORED WITH DOE’S HBCU CLEAN ENERGY EDUCATION PRIZE

HOWARD UNIVERSITY HONORED WITH DOE’S HBCU CLEAN ENERGY EDUCATION PRIZE
Posted By: Catalina Deossa on August 02, 2024

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy has awarded Howard University a significant prize as part of its inaugural Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Clean Energy Education Prize Partnerships Track. Howard University, one of ten recipients in Phase 1, received $100,000 to foster collaborations aimed at advancing clean energy education. As the university enters Phase 2, it is eligible to share a $4 million prize pool based on the project's progress.

The university is collaborating with Drexel University to establish a cross-university exchange program focused on clean energy, building decarbonization, and smart building resiliency. This initiative includes developing a new curriculum and providing experiential learning opportunities. The partnership aims to enhance student training in these areas, preparing them for leadership roles in the clean energy sector.

Howard University has also introduced an interdisciplinary course titled Environmental Justice (EJ) + Health + Decarbonization. Nea Maloo, an assistant professor at Howard, is leading this course and will contribute to the DOE’s Faculty-Applied Clean Energy Sciences (FACES) Program to advance STEM education and clean energy initiatives.

The collaboration and coursework are designed to advance clean energy education with a focus on justice and equity, addressing climate change impacts, and preparing students from HBCUs for careers in this field. Howard University's Master of Architecture program has also been recognized with the DOE’s Zero Energy Design Designation (ZEDD), further establishing the institution's leadership in clean energy education.

This initiative is expected to provide valuable interdisciplinary experiences for students and foster innovation in clean energy solutions, particularly benefiting communities vulnerable to climate impacts.
