FEDEX: ADVANCING EDUCATION AND LEADERSHIP FOR APIA SCHOLARS, LGBTQ+ STUDENTS, AND HBCU LEADERS
|
Posted By: Catalina Deossa on August 02, 2024 FedEx's Commitment to Supporting Diverse Student Populations 1. HBCU Strategy: FedEx has implemented a comprehensive strategy to support Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) through three main areas: Engage: Utilizing its channels and outreach to enhance awareness about the academic and career opportunities available at HBCUs. Empower + Educate: Partnering with HBCUs to provide educational experiences that bolster career preparedness. Connect: Linking HBCU students with FedEx leaders to offer insights into the business world and various career opportunities. In 2022, FedEx introduced the FedEx-HBCU Student Ambassador Program, aimed at preparing new student cohorts for the workforce. This initiative provides leadership and career readiness training through interactions with FedEx team members and unique learning experiences. The 2023 cohort began in Los Angeles, where students not only engaged with FedEx leadership but also celebrated Black excellence at the 54th annual NAACP Image Awards, sponsored by FedEx. The program continues to offer hands-on experiences and mentorship to cultivate future leaders. 2. Support for LGBTQ+ Students: FedEx demonstrates its commitment to LGBTQ+ students by funding scholarships through the Point Foundation. This foundation aids LGBTQ+ students who face disproportionate financial and social challenges in higher education. FedEx supports two four-year flagship scholarships annually, which are complemented by the Point Foundation’s mentoring, coaching, and leadership development services. In 2023, the Point Foundation welcomed its largest-ever class of scholars, reflecting FedEx’s dedication to addressing inequality and fostering positive change within the LGBTQ+ community. 3. APIA Scholars Program: FedEx supports the educational and professional goals of Asian and Pacific Islander American (APIA) students through its funding of the APIA Scholars program. Each year, FedEx provides four-year scholarships to ten APIA students, the majority of whom are first-generation college students or come from low-income backgrounds. Alongside financial aid, FedEx contributes to the APIA Scholars’ Professional Mentorship and Career Development program, which offers personalized support to secure internships and full-time positions. This initiative helps students navigate their academic paths and launch successful careers. One notable recipient is Froilan Camacho, a first-generation student from Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands, pursuing a veterinary degree in the U.S. The FedEx APIA Scholars scholarship alleviates the financial challenges associated with his education. Froilan aspires to return to his community to establish an animal clinic, using his veterinary skills to support and preserve the local farming culture. These initiatives reflect FedEx’s ongoing commitment to fostering leadership, career readiness, and educational support among diverse student groups. Through its investments in HBCUs, LGBTQ+ students, and APIA scholars, FedEx is dedicated to creating opportunities and advancing equity in education and professional development.
