EPA ENHANCES ENGAGEMENT WITH HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES
|
Posted By: Catalina Deossa on August 02, 2024 The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently introduced a series of initiatives aimed at strengthening its partnership with historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Announced on Wednesday during the UNCF’s (United Negro College Fund) UNITE 2024 Summit, these efforts include the establishment of a $2.5 million grant designed to foster collaboration between HBCU faculty, students, and the EPA. EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan highlighted the significant contributions of HBCUs in producing talented and innovative professionals. He underscored the administration’s commitment to empowering these institutions, noting that HBCU graduates, including Vice President Kamala Harris, are making impactful contributions across various sectors. Regan affirmed the EPA's dedication to ensuring that HBCUs play a central role in the environmental movement. The newly established grant will be used to support the development of educational programs focused on climate change and environmental justice. Additionally, it will fund community-driven projects aimed at addressing critical environmental issues. Examples of such projects include creating green spaces, implementing low-emission vehicle car-sharing programs, upgrading HVAC systems, and installing water efficiency systems to combat pollution. In addition to the grant, the EPA’s initiatives will target several key areas. These include advancing workforce development through training, internships, and fellowships that prepare diverse young professionals for careers in environmental fields. The focus will also be on improving environmental education and building institutional capacity at HBCUs, as well as funding projects related to climate change, water quality, and land health. To further support these goals, the EPA will establish a new position: the HBCU Outreach and Engagement Liaison. This role will be responsible for connecting HBCUs with EPA resources, including grant opportunities, and ensuring effective coordination between the agency and these institutions. Furthermore, the EPA will create its first HBCU-MSI (Minority-Serving Institution) Federal Advisory Council. This council will comprise experts from academia, industry, community organizations, and local governments. Its purpose will be to provide guidance on enhancing HBCU participation in federal programs and increasing diversity within the EPA workforce. Overall, these initiatives are designed to strengthen the involvement of HBCUs in addressing environmental challenges and to ensure that these institutions are integral to the EPA’s mission of promoting environmental protection and sustainability.
