Oakwood University School of Nursing Hosts Inaugural Nursing Dedication and White Coat Ceremony

Only once students embark on their junior year, are they officially recognized and empowered to enter the clinical phases of their education. This year, in commemoration of the transition, the School of Nursing held its first Nursing Dedication and White Coat Ceremony. Pastor Chris Dorsey, who spoke for the dedication service, sought to inspire students to their ability to witness for Christ even as healthcare workers. Similarly, Dr. Karen Lynch-Frater, Department Chair, said in her address, “As you don your white coats one by one, I challenge you to purpose in your hearts and minds to honor the School of Nursing’s Student Code for Honorable and Professional Behavior. The code focuses on the core values of respect, excellence, accountability, diversity and integrity.” In their pristine white coats, students held electric candles up to their professors who symbolically lit them signifying the start of their journey into nursing and a life of service. In closing, Dr. Lynch-Frater gave a word of encouragement, “Although the upcoming semesters of study will be intense, they will be worth it.” Finally, she challenged students to leave the ceremony determined to remove distractions, place their hands in God’s hands, and move toward a fulfilling career.
