President Pollard of Oakwood University Welcomes African University Leaders to Campus

Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on October 04, 2024 On September 25, 2024, Dr. Leslie Pollard, and Provost, Dr. James Mbyirukira, welcomed 20 African leaders in higher education to campus. The event, held in the President's Dining Room, was coordinated through Oakwood’s partnership with Global Ties of Alabama and Mrs. Jacqueline Shipe, Director and former Advancement VP of Oakwood University. Introducing the distinguished guests to the unique history and mission of Oakwood University, Pollard sought to foster an atmosphere of mutual respect and cultural exchange. The African leaders also shared about their institutions, enriching the dialogue with diverse perspectives and promoting international collaboration in higher education. Together, they discussed these topics: • Collaborative Opportunities – in academia, research, and student exchange programs. • Challenges – identified by higher education institutions and strategies to address them. • Sustainability and Progress – best practices in education and the promoting development-focused agendas. The discussions aimed at fostering a broader understanding and building lasting connections between Oakwood University and the African educational institutions. President Pollard reflected, “In every meeting of this type, we discover that our struggles and successes form common ground in educating the next generation of servant-leaders.” The meeting concluded with a shared meal and picture taking as global ties were built.
