2nd Annual HBCU Financial Literacy Bowl Crowns Student Champions From Tuskegee University

2nd Annual HBCU Financial Literacy Bowl Crowns Student Champions From Tuskegee University

The Society for Financial Education & Professional Development (SFEPD) proudly announces the winners of its 2024 HBCU Financial Literacy Bowl competition: Charniece Jones, Donato Miller, Taylor Montgomery, D’Kia Dent of Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, Alabama.

SFEPD’s annual HBCU Financial Literacy Bowl is a two-part competition, sponsored by the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) which invites students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to show off their financial knowledge. The first round was held virtually on Wednesday, September 4, from 6-7 p.m. EST, with three teams of four students competing in a speed round of financial literacy questions utilizing an electronic platform that weighed speed when correctly answering the questions.

Today, the top three teams and their oversight professors joined SFEPD in the Final Round of the HBCU Financial Literacy Bowl – in a live competition as part of the organization’s 16th Annual Financial Literacy Leadership Conference from October 3-4 at Gaylord National Resort in National Harbor, Maryland.

According to a report from the National Urban League released on September 2 of this year, African-American adults report low scores of financial knowledge compared to other groups. SFEPD understands that increasing financial literacy in HBCU students can equip them to make positive financial decisions for themselves and their families throughout their lives, strengthen the economy overall, and close a widening wealth gap.

“By teaching young people about financial literacy – particularly students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities – we can close the wealth gap that still persists in this country today,” says SFEPD Founder and President Mr. Theodore Daniels. “Not only are we teaching essential skills that will increase quality of life and allow Black families to build generational wealth, but we’re making it fun.”

The Society for Financial Education & Professional Development (SFEPD) is one of the first-ever organizations to customize and teach financial literacy programming and professional development for Americans, in particular first-generation college students and underserved communities, particularly communities of color.

Since 1998, SFEPD has taught personal finance seminars to more than 500,000 people, the majority of which were students at more than 90 colleges and universities, primarily HBCUs. On August 1 of this year, SFEPD launched its first-ever financial literacy certification program – “Mind Over Money Skills," with more than 200 students already registered nationwide.

ABOUT THE SOCIETY FOR FINANCIAL EDUCATION & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: For nearly 25 years, SFEPD, based in the Washington, D.C. area, has served as an award-winning financial literacy and professional development nonprofit teaching financial skills to people of all ages and backgrounds with a focus on underserved communities. SFEPD is directed by President and Founder Ted Daniels, a global financial literacy leader. Learn more at www.sfepd.org.
