Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on October 17, 2024 SAMHSA's 988 and Behavioral Health Crisis Coordinating Office is partnering with the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Center for Excellence in Behavioral Health/Leadership in Education, Awareness, and Preparation (HBCU L.E.A.P.), Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) grantee, and the African American Behavioral Health Center of Excellence (AABH), Office of Behavioral Health Equity (OBHE) grantee, and other collaborators to address the African American youth and young adult suicide crisis and to promote mental wellness and resiliency. It will also aim to increase diversity in the crisis care workforce within and for the African American community. Forming new partnerships with more than 100 HBCUs across the nation, the goals of the 988 Call for the Culture HBCU national initiative include: * To increase awareness of the 988-crisis continuum (Someone to Call. Someone to Respond. A SafePlace for Help.) among HBCU students, administrators, and campus leadership, as well as the broader circle of family, friends, and community members with whom they engage. * To develop and disseminate a resource toolkit and marketing materials that HBCUs can use and customize to promote and support their outreach efforts of the use of 988 and local behavioral health prevention, crisis stabilization, treatment, and recovery services, and supports. * To advance health equity by increasing awareness of the need, opportunities, resources, networks, and pathways for HBCU students to become interested in, secure, and retain jobs in behavioral health crisis care disciplines. * To forge innovative and positive partnerships and collaborations to help decrease the suicide rate among African American youth and young adults.
