5 Tips To Represent Yourself Well During The Hiring Process

5 Tips To Represent Yourself Well During The Hiring Process
Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on October 18, 2024

You found an open job that suits you, applied and scheduled an interview with the recruiter. Now it’s time to demonstrate why you’re the right fit. Here are some tips to impress the hiring team.

1. Study the job posting

In the days leading up to your first interview, review the role’s responsibilities and qualifications. Create talking points based on these. Your examples don’t all need to be from previous jobs — extracurricular activities and group projects can make great talking points. For phone and virtual interviews, have a copy of the job posting handy to reference.

2. Be prepared

If your interview is in person, give yourself plenty of time to get there. Aim to arrive 15 minutes early. This isn’t simply to demonstrate your punctuality. The extra downtime before the interview is valuable for mental preparation. Use this time to decompress from your routine and think about your answers.

If the interview is over the phone or virtual, find a quiet, secluded space that will be free of distractions throughout the interview. Make sure your technology is fully charged and ready to use.

3. Plan your outfit

For most interviews, business casual is a safe bet. For example, a nice button-down shirt or blouse and pair of slacks. Bonus tip: For virtual interviews, think about what your background will look like. Make sure your room is well-lit. Look behind you to see what the hiring team will see.

4. Give detailed answers

During the interview, listen carefully to each question and take your time before responding.

The STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) can be a helpful way to frame your answers.

Here's an example:
  • Situation: “I was approached by an upset customer.”
  • Task: “I needed to make sure their issues were resolved.”
  • Action: “I listened as they described their situation, apologized for the error and found an alternative product that met their needs.”
  • Result: “As a result, the customer's needs were met, and they left satisfied.”

5. Ask questions

This is a great way to demonstrate that you’re curious and passionate about the role. During phone interviews, recruiters can usually answer questions about the company or high-level questions about the team. When you’re speaking to the hiring manager and their team, this is a great opportunity to dig deeper into the specifics of the role and learn about people you’d be working closely with.
