The 2025 Mazda CX-70 Joins the Competitive Midsize SUV Race

The 2025 Mazda CX-70 Joins the Competitive Midsize SUV Race
Posted By: Randi Payton on January 08, 2025

The all-new Mazda CX-70 Turbo S Premium Plus joins the midsize SUV class with Style and performance. Stepping into the CX-70, you’re surrounded by a symphony of high-quality materials and meticulous attention to detail that envelops you in a cocoon of luxury. Open-pore wood trim gleams alongside supple Nappa leather, creating a refined and inviting ambiance. This SUV is a testament to Mazda's commitment to crafting beautiful and functional vehicles.

However, as a newcomer to the midsize SUV segment, it faces stiff competition from established players like the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Kia Telluride, Toyota Grand Highlander, Toyota Land Cruiser, and Ford Bronco. Yet, the CX-70 enters the fray with a distinct advantage: Mazda's unwavering focus on driving dynamics and emotional engagement.

Mazda aims to differentiate itself from competitors by offering a more engaging and emotionally rewarding driving experience. This includes focusing on sharp handling, responsive steering, and a powerful yet refined powertrain. Mazda has invested heavily in building a strong image with premium quality, craftsmanship, and driving enjoyment.

Ultimately, Mazda targets SUV consumers by emphasizing the "Jinba Ittai" philosophy. This concept translates to "horse and rider as one," hoping to create a unique and rewarding ownership experience. The CX-70, with its blend of sophisticated design, exhilarating performance, and commitment to driver enjoyment, is poised to make a significant impact in this competitive segment.

I had the pleasure of testing the 2025 Mazda CX-70 Turbo S Premium Plus for a week and can confidently say it's a serious contender in the competitive midsize SUV segment. Here’s my take on it:

Power/Performance: The CX-70 is powered by a 3.3-liter turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine that delivers a smooth and refined 340 horsepower in the S trims and 280 hp in the base model. Mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and standard i-Activ all-wheel drive, the powertrain provides effortless acceleration in both city and highway driving. A CX-70 PHEV is also available, which combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor that produces 323 horsepower. It features a 17.8 kWh battery pack with an all-electric driving range of 26 miles.

Price/Models: The CX-70 is available in five trim levels: Preferred ($41,900), Premium ($47,355), Premium Plus ($50,355), S Premium ($53,905), and S Premium Plus.

I tested the top-of-the-line S Premium Plus, which costs $57,920 MSRP after adding optional metallic paint and delivery charges. The S Premium Plus model competes in the premium luxury segment, offering a strong value proposition with its extensive standard features and engaging driving dynamics.

Features/Technology: The CX-70 is packed with advanced features and technology. The 12.3-inch curved display is a centerpiece of the cabin, providing a visually stunning interface for the infotainment system. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration made it easy to stay connected, while the premium Bose sound system delivered a rich and immersive audio experience. The head-up display projected vital information onto the windshield, further enhancing the driving experience.

Interior/Exterior: The CX-70, a two-row with five seats, exudes sophistication both inside and out. The interior is a masterclass in craftsmanship, with luxurious materials like Nappa leather seats and open-pore wood trim creating a refined and inviting ambiance. The exterior design is equally striking, featuring sharp lines, bold proportions, and a distinctive front grille that gives the CX-70 a commanding presence on the road.

Safety: The CX-70 prioritizes safety with a comprehensive suite of i-Activsense features, including adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane departure warning with lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic emergency braking.

Fuel Economy: According to EPA ratings, the CX-70's fuel economy is 23 city/28 highway mpg.
