Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on January 10, 2025 Cynthia Adams, an Oakwood University alumna, made history by becoming the first Black woman to hold the position of chief superior court judge in Douglas County, Georgia. "I just thank my parents that they never quieted that over-boisterous child," Adams said shortly after being sworn in by Georgia Supreme Court Justice Verda Colvin. She was appointed to the bench by then- Gov. Nathan Deal. In 2017, Adams became the first African American woman to serve as a judge in Douglas County, and has been re-elected twice to continue serving her community. Adams began her academic journey at Oakwood College (now Oakwood University), where she graduated with honors in 1999, earning a degree in English and Communication. This foundation gave her a strong command of language and communication skills, which later propelled her to the University of Georgia School of Law, where she earned her juris doctor in 2002. Beyond her judicial duties, Judge Adams is active in her community, leading initiatives like Robes Reading Across Georgia, where judges read virtually to elementary school students statewide. She also created a reading library for children involved in the Douglas County Juvenile Court. A member of the Atlanta Berean Seventh-day Adventist Church, Judge Adams is married to her college sweetheart, attorney Dwayne Adams. The couple resides in Douglasville with their two children.
