Lincoln University Student Receives Dennys and Getty Images Hungry for Education Stipend

Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on January 28, 2025 Lincoln University, the nation’s first degree-granting Historically Black College and University (HBCU), is proud to announce that a dedicated student of the university, Travis Primrose, is the recipient of the Denny’s and Getty Images Hungry for Education (HFE) Stipend. This initiative is part of the broader HBCU Photo Archive Grants Program led by Getty Images, which aims to support the digitization of HBCU archives, as well as the educational journeys and mentorship opportunities of students from HBCUs across the United States. Travis Primrose has been awarded a stipend of $500 for his outstanding contribution toward preserving the historical archives of Lincoln University. During his time working with the university’s Special Collections & Archives, Primrose has significantly enriched the university’s historical records. His efforts in digitizing vital photographs have helped highlight the rich legacy and the black excellence emanating from Lincoln University over the years. Tiffany Davis, Library Director and Public Access & Electronic Resources Librarian at the Langston Hughes Memorial Library says, "I am thrilled that Travis's exceptional work with Special Collections & Archives is being recognized. His careful attention to detail in digitizing our historical photographs has been invaluable in preserving Lincoln University's rich legacy. His work ensures that future generations will have access to these vital records of Black excellence at Lincoln University. Travis represents the very best of our student workers, combining technical skill with a genuine appreciation for the historical significance of our archives." Travis Primrose's selected photographs showcase a vibrant student life, historical protests, and notable Lincoln University alumni including Langston Hughes and Kwame Nkrumah, providing a window into the community and achievements of previous students and alumni. His work not only preserves history but also ensures that the legacy of black excellence continues to inspire future generations. "This program has introduced me to a brand-new side of Lincoln’s legacy that I would have never known of unless I had invested myself in these images and their history," said Travis Primrose. "These ten [images] give me a sense of community, the school’s historical importance, and the black excellence that has been produced over the years since its creation." The stipend will support Travis’s educational expenses as he continues to pursue his studies in finance at Lincoln University. Raquel Lightner, University Archivist and Records Manager at the Langston Hughes Memorial Library, adds, “Travis consistently demonstrates exceptional dedication to preserving the history of the first degree-granting HBCU, making him an invaluable part of this partnership.
