Posted By: TaQuan Ford on March 02, 2025 The world of soul music has been blessed with extraordinary voices that have shaped the genre and influenced generations. Among them, Angie Stone and Roberta Flack stood as icons, leaving an undeniable impact on R&B, soul, and beyond. Their artistry, storytelling, and powerful presence have solidified their places in music history, particularly within the Black community and HBCU culture. Angie Stone: A Neo-Soul Pioneer Angie Stone, who tragically passed away in 2025, was more than just a singer—she was a movement. With a career spanning decades, Stone’s journey began in the late 1970s with the pioneering female hip-hop group, The Sequence. She later transitioned into R&B and neo-soul, earning recognition for hits like No More Rain (In This Cloud) and Wish I Didn’t Miss You. Her music spoke to the soul, blending heartfelt lyrics with smooth, rich vocals. Stone’s ability to infuse traditional R&B with contemporary sounds made her a defining figure in the neo-soul movement alongside artists like Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, and D’Angelo. Her influence extended beyond the microphone, inspiring a new generation of artists who followed in her footsteps. In addition to her musical legacy, Stone was an honorary member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., further cementing her connection to Black excellence and community service. Roberta Flack: The Voice of Timeless Love Songs Roberta Flack, a legendary vocalist and pianist, passed away in 2025, leaving behind a catalog of timeless classics such as The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, Killing Me Softly with His Song, and Feel Like Makin’ Love. A proud graduate of Howard University, Flack’s connection to HBCU culture was profound, representing the excellence and artistry nurtured within these institutions. Her ability to convey deep emotion through her voice made her one of the most revered singers of all time. Flack’s work transcends generations, and her impact on music remains unmatched. Even in her later years, as she faced health challenges, her legacy continued to inspire artists and fans alike. A Lasting Legacy in HBCU Culture Both Stone and Flack embodied the spirit of Black excellence and cultural pride, influencing HBCU students and alumni who see them as representations of resilience, talent, and passion. Their contributions to music provided the soundtrack to many moments of love, reflection, and empowerment within the Black community. As we honor these two incredible women, we acknowledge the power of their music in shaping not only the industry but also the cultural fabric of HBCUs and beyond. Though they are no longer with us, their voices will forever echo in the halls of soul music, reminding us of the beauty, depth, and influence of Black artistry.
