Sodexo and SodexoMagic nationally recognize outstanding HBCU dining team members

Sodexo and SodexoMagic nationally recognize outstanding HBCU dining team members

Sodexo’s Experiences Matter program is making a significant impact, highlighting employees who provide exceptional service to students, faculty, and staff. In the Guillory region, which includes Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska—several team members have been recognized at both regional and national levels through the program’s Thx :) for Making My Day and Kudos award programs.

These awards celebrate employees who create positive experiences on campus. Students submit nominations for the THX award, while managers and colleagues nominate team members for Kudos. Each month, district managers select a finalist among a list of nominees from their areas, then the senior vice president selects one winner for each program to be entered into the national selection process, involving the COO and CEO.

Honoring Excellence Across Campuses

Tamara Clark, a product prep specialist, was selected as the November National Kudos Winner for the West. The dining team and members of the district support team celebrated her recognition with an event featuring a themed cake, an assortment of king cakes delivered by District Manager, Phoebe Cook, themed décor, and remarks from General Manager, TJ Talabi, District Manager, Phoebe Cook, Safety Manager Edna King, and Marketing Manager, Maya Weber. The celebration also honored Shirley Simms, a regional winner, along with all nominated employees.

Tamara’s nomination emphasized her strong work ethic and team spirit:
"Tamara completes her tasks with precision while always looking for ways to help others. Her dedication and enthusiasm inspire those around her, and she plays a vital role in the café’s success."

Tamara said, “Winning the national award was an overwhelming experience for me. It wasn’t just a trophy or a title, it felt like a powerful acknowledgment of all the hard work I’ve put in over the years. Personally, it made me feel truly appreciated, every effort I’ve given finally paid off. It wasn’t just about receiving the award itself but about knowing that my dedication and passion for what I do hasn’t gone unnoticed.”

Shirley Simms, who has been with Sodexo for over 30 years, was recognized for her willingness to step in wherever needed:

"Shirley’s kindness and commitment have shaped the team culture. Whether assisting in the dish room or supporting HR, she brings a spirit of generosity and collaboration that lifts everyone around her."

When the winners were announced, Shirley expressed her appreciation: “I was so honored, blessed, and shocked when my name was called to receive the Regional Award. I was competing against sixty-four schools, and at that moment, I felt like I was on cloud nine.

As soon as I got to my office, I did a happy dance.”

Texas Southern University

Scott Sondergaard, Senior Inventory Specialist, was named January’s National Kudos Winner for the West. His recognition took place during a morning huddle with General Manager Brian Lee, Director of Operations Kalen Smith, District Manager Murat Bora, and Senior Vice President Ron Guillory.

Scott’s nomination reflected his attention to detail and reliability:

"Scott is focused, hardworking, and always willing to step up. His efforts in inventory and receiving have helped improve processes, and his positive attitude makes a difference every day."

Scott spoke about his experience:

"This recognition reassures me that I’m on the right path. Transitioning from grocery retail to food service was a challenge, but I’ve grown by asking questions and learning from the team."

Prairie View A&M University

Josie Palmer was honored as January’s National Thx :) for Making My Day Winner. She was surprised during a team huddle when COO Moses DeBord shared a message of appreciation via video call. Members of the national and regional Experiences Matter teams, along with district leaders, joined in the moment.

Josie’s journey with Sodexo began as an Office Secretary before she moved into a Production Assistant role. Her connection with students made her transition into customer service a natural fit.

"A student once told me my daily greeting helped him through tough days. That reminded me of how much small gestures matter," Josie said.

Students submitted over 25 nominations for Josie, praising her kindness:

"She always greets me with a smile and asks how I’m doing. One morning, I was struggling, and her encouragement made me feel seen."

Recognizing Dedication and Commitment

Across these campuses, the Experiences Matter program encourages a culture of appreciation. Employees like Tamara, Scott, Shirley, and Josie set a high standard for hospitality and service.

“Beyond the academic excellence that an institution offers, students increasingly seek a campus that fosters a sense of belonging,” said Guillory. “They want to feel connected with like-minded peers and be part of a community. According to Sodexo's 2024–2025 Student Lifestyle Survey, an impressive 84% of students believe that a friendly and welcoming atmosphere plays a key role in their college selection process.

I am incredibly excited to witness such an engaged and vibrant community of students and our team members across the region, all working together to cultivate an environment where everyone can thrive. It is through your dedication and commitment that we continue to create spaces where students feel they truly belong.”

With multiple national winners emerging from the Guillory region, it’s clear that the dedication of Sodexo’s dining teams is being recognized and celebrated. Their commitment to creating a welcoming experience for students stands out in every interaction.
