University of the District of Columbia, Accenture and PeopleShores partner to expand career opportunities for D.C. residents

University of the District of Columbia, Accenture and PeopleShores partner to expand career opportunities for D.C. residents

The University of the District of Columbia (UDC), in collaboration with Accenture and PeopleShores, are proud to announce the official launch of a new Cybersecurity Tech Hub at UDC’s Congress Heights campus, marking a major investment in the future of the District’s workforce. The partnership is designed to expand career pathways into the cybersecurity industry through an innovative, paid apprenticeship program.

The inaugural cohort of 50 individuals began the program in April 2025. Among them is Amani Walker, a resident of Ward 7 who’s always enjoyed mysteries and detective shows and is now putting that passion for solving puzzles to work as a cybersecurity apprentice: “This was a chance I knew I couldn’t pass up. It is rare to come across an opportunity of this magnitude. The program is very student-forward and people-forward. We have an amazing support system and a good, hands-on learning environment. I’m excited about my future.”

Joshua Hawkins, born and raised in Ward 8, was already enrolled at UDC when a professor recommended him for the apprenticeship. He says he loves what he’s learning and is excited to apply it. “This journey is about learning. My daughter is very proud of me, as is my grandmother, who supports my journey. I want better for my family than I had growing up, and I’m getting a strong foundation in this program.” As he progresses, Joshua is building a meaningful career while setting an example of determination and growth for his family and community.

The program includes:
• 15 weeks of technical training in cybersecurity fundamentals, delivered by Per Scholas in partnership with Accenture subject matter experts
• Nine months of on-the-job project experience with Accenture teams
• Competitive pay and full benefits throughout the 12-month apprenticeship
• A pathway to potential full-time employment with Accenture upon completion

At the heart of this new program is a commitment to innovation, economic mobility and building pathways to prosperity for D.C. residents shared by the partnering institutions:

“This partnership is much more than a training program—it is a launchpad for District residents seeking meaningful, lasting careers in a high-demand field,” said UDC President Maurice D. Edington. “It also reflects UDC’s strategic vision of becoming the District’s leading workforce and economic mobility engine, and we are extremely proud to work with Accenture and PeopleShores to bring this vision to life.”

“At PeopleShores, we believe deeply in unlocking human potential by creating access to meaningful technology careers in underserved communities,” said PeopleShores Founder and CEO Murali Vullaganti. “This program is a vibrant example of what’s possible when mission-driven partners invest in local talent. We’re honored to stand alongside UDC and Accenture to open new doors for the residents of D.C.”

“Although talent and hope are equally distributed across every ward in D.C. and every neighborhood in the DMV, access to opportunity is not,” said Marty Rogers, Accenture U.S. Lead, Health and Public Service Client Group. “Apprenticeship programs like this one from Accenture, PeopleShores and UDC can change that by equipping more local individuals with the chance to earn and learn in-demand cybersecurity skills, thereby opening doors to financially and professionally rewarding careers.”
