Posted By: Danielle Duncan on August 29, 2025 For many years, I carried the belief that because I left college in 2007 before graduating, I had somehow failed. Life had other plans for me. Like many young women, I found myself balancing education, family responsibilities, financial challenges, and the uncertainty that comes with trying to build a future while navigating adulthood. I attended Benedict College with the goal of earning my degree and creating a better life for myself and my son. When circumstances changed, I made the difficult decision to step away from school. For a long time, I focused on survival, raising my son, building a career, and finding opportunities wherever I could. Although I was no longer in the classroom, I never stopped learning. Over the years, I gained valuable experience in banking, mortgage operations, customer service, and client relations. I learned how to solve problems, support customers during difficult situations, and build relationships based on trust and professionalism. Those experiences helped shape who I am today and taught me lessons that cannot be found in a textbook. Recently, I reviewed my college transcripts and discovered something that changed my perspective. I realized I had completed far more coursework than I remembered and may be much closer to finishing my degree than I once believed. What felt like a closed chapter suddenly became a possibility again. Today, I am pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Psychology at Norfolk State University with plans to continue on to graduate school and become a licensed therapist. My goal is to help black women navigate life's challenges, build resilience, and create healthier futures for themselves and their families. I believe that our experiences, both the victories and the setbacks, can become tools that help us serve others more effectively. One of the greatest lessons I have learned is that success does not always follow a straight line. Sometimes our journeys include detours, pauses, and unexpected turns. Those moments do not define our potential. They simply become part of our story. To anyone who has ever felt behind, discouraged, or uncertain about whether it's worth trying again, I want to offer this reminder: your dream does not expire because life got complicated. Progress may take longer than expected, but every step forward still counts. As an HBCU student and professional, I am proud of the path that brought me here. I am excited about the future, committed to continuous growth, and grateful for the opportunity to keep writing the next chapter of my story. The dream is still alive. And I am still becoming.
