Events DC Presents: The Battle for the Real HU

Events DC Presents: The Battle for the Real HU
Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on December 04, 2025

Events DC, the official convention and sports authority of Washington, DC, will present The Battle for the Real HU: The Basketball Series on Saturday, December 13 at CareFirst Arena. The contest will feature the Howard University Bison, and the Hampton University Pirates basketball teams competing for “the real HU” title.

“Washington, DC is a world-class city united by sports, making it the perfect host of The Battle for the Real HU,” said Events DC President and CEO Angie M. Gates. “I warmly invite basketball fans to join us at CareFirst Arena for an exciting doubleheader featuring the best collegiate basketball. I look forward to celebrating the talent on the court, while honoring the pride of two outstanding historically Black institutions.”
This will be the second time the historic rivalry will be hosted in Washington, DC’s Congress Heights neighborhood at the CareFirst Arena and the first time it will feature both a women’s and men’s game.

“The Howard-Hampton rivalry is rooted in history, respect, and HBCU pride. This game is just one more way in which we’re creating an opportunity for our communities to come together to honor tradition, celebrate excellence, and uplift our student-athletes,” said Howard University Vice President of Athletics Kery Davis.

“We’re proud to continue this legacy through partnering with Events DC to provide a stage worthy of what this rivalry represents. And, as we've seen victories by our women’s soccer and football teams over Hampton University so far this year, we’re looking forward to keeping that streak going on December 13 when our men's and women's basketball teams face off at CareFirst Arena.”

“The Battle for the Real HU represents one of the most storied and anticipated rivalries in college basketball. It embodies the rich tradition, pride, and excellence that define Hampton University and our athletic programs,” said Hampton University Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Anthony D. Henderson, Sr. “We are especially excited to expand this year’s event by adding the women’s game to the lineup, providing another opportunity to showcase the talent, passion, and competitive spirit of our student-athletes. This year’s Battle for the Real HU promises to be a remarkable celebration of both institutions and the enduring legacy of this historic rivalry.”

As part of the event, The Park at 14th is sponsoring the “The Park at 14th H-Unity Lounge” offering the best courtside views, bottomless bites and complimentary beverages.

One ticket will allow entry to both the women’s and men’s games. Tickets start at $42 plus taxes and fees. They are available at Ticketmaster.
