In 2023, Bennett College celebrated 150 years since its founding in 1873 in the basement of St. Matthews United Methodist Church, and, in 2026, will commemorate 100 years as a college for women—a remarkable century of empowering women of color through transformative liberal arts education. Today, this historically black college continues that legacy on its 55-acre campus in the heart of Greensboro, North Carolina, preparing women of color to lead with purpose, integrity, and a strong sense of self-worth. As one of only two all-women's HBCUs in the United States, Bennett holds a distinctive place in American higher education. The College has been recognized as a Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leader for six consecutive years and ranked #1 in Social Mobility by U.S. News & World Report in 2022, reflecting its commitment to transforming students' lives. Bennett was also named a 2022-2023 Best College by U.S. News & World Report and is a VA-approved school. Bennett's philosophy centers on providing high-quality academic and co-curricular programs that encourage personal development, endorse lifelong learning, and prepare students to meet the needs of an ever-changing society. With a 9:1 student-to-faculty ratio, Bennett offers an intimate learning environment where every student receives personalized attention and mentorship. State-of-the-art television and photography studios provide hands-on learning opportunities in media and communications. At Bennett College, students choose from robust programs including Business Administration, Psychology, Biology, Interdisciplinary Studies, and Elementary Education. Through the Center for Global Studies, more than 300+ Bennett Belles have traveled to over 30 countries, gaining international perspectives through study abroad opportunities in North Africa, Japan, Spain, Cyprus, Austria, Costa Rica, and beyond, while also engaging with languages including Portuguese, Arabic, Chinese, and Kiswahili. Bennett is also the first and only women's college in the country to have a Women's Business Center located on its campus, providing invaluable resources and support for aspiring women entrepreneurs. Strategic academic partnerships with neighboring institutions expand educational opportunities for Bennett students. Tradition and sisterhood define the Bennett experience. Freshwomen dressed in white walk through the historic Bearden Gates during "Convocatum Est," officially becoming Bennett Belles. Weekly Academic Cultural Enrichment Series (A.C.E.S.) gatherings bring the entire campus together for dynamic speakers and meaningful discussions. The historic Annie Merner Pfeiffer Chapel, where formal ceremonies take place under the gentle gaze of Mary's stained-glass image, was the site of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s only speech in Greensboro—a testament to Bennett's long history of leadership in civil rights and social justice. The College also proudly claims another historic first: Dr. Willa B. Player served as the first Black woman president of a four-year U.S. college. Election season marches to the polls, dorm storms, and gatherings in the Student Union create lasting bonds. The "Big Sister" tradition pairs new students with juniors, fostering mentorship and lifelong friendships. The "Big Sister" tradition pairs new students with juniors, fostering mentorship and lifelong friendships. As a United Methodist Church-related institution located just walking distance from downtown Greensboro's vibrant arts and cultural scene, Bennett believes education should serve humanitarian ends. The College promotes inquiry, civic engagement, social justice, and equity for all—values reflected in every aspect of campus life, from formal ceremonies in the Chapel to everyday moments of community and connection. At Bennett College, sisterhood is more than a word—it's a transformative experience that prepares women to lead, inspire, and change the world.
