Jackson State's Shedeur Sanders Named to NFL Pro Bowl, Continuing HBCU Football's Rise

Jackson State

JACKSON, MS - The meteoric rise of former Jackson State University quarterback Shedeur Sanders continues as he has been named to the NFL Pro Bowl Games roster, replacing the injured Drake Maye of the New England Patriots.

Sanders, now the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, will make his Pro Bowl debut after a standout rookie campaign that saw him lead the Browns to a 3-4 record in his seven starts. The 144th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, Sanders impressed with his dual-threat ability, throwing for 1,400 yards and 7 touchdowns while also rushing for 169 yards and a score.

Key Takeaway: Shedeur Sanders' Pro Bowl selection is a testament to the growing prominence of HBCU football programs in producing NFL-caliber talent. His journey from Jackson State star to Cleveland Browns starter and now Pro Bowler is inspiring for the entire HBCU community.

Before reaching the NFL, Sanders established himself as one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and HBCU history.

Over two seasons at Jackson State, he threw for 6,983 yards and 70 touchdowns, leading the Tigers to a SWAC championship in 2022.

"Shedeur Sanders' success at Jackson State and now in the NFL continues to shine a national spotlight on HBCU football and the incredible talent that exists within our community," said HBCUConnect.com Editor-in-Chief John Smith. "His Pro Bowl selection is a proud moment for all HBCU alumni and supporters, and serves as further proof that our institutions can produce NFL-caliber players who can compete at the highest level."

The 2026 Pro Bowl Games will take place in San Francisco ahead of Super Bowl LX, with Pro Football Hall of Famers Jerry Rice (NFC) and Steve Young (AFC) serving as team coaches for the flag football showdown.

Shedeur Sanders' journey from HBCU star to NFL Pro Bowler is a testament to the immense talent and potential within the HBCU football community. As he takes the field alongside the league's elite, he continues to redefine what's possible for quarterbacks from historically Black colleges and universities.
