SportsCenter Celebrates HBCU Excellence at Jackson State for Black History Month

SportsCenter Celebrates HBCU Excellence at Jackson State for Black History Month
Posted By: Will Moss on January 27, 2026

Jackson State University, a prominent Historically Black College and University (HBCU), is set to take center stage as ESPN's SportsCenter broadcasts live from the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center on Monday, February 2nd. This rare on-campus HBCU appearance marks a significant milestone, officially kicking off Black History Month with a national spotlight on the Jackson State Tigers.

The visit places Jackson State among a select group of college programs chosen for SportsCenter on Campus, a testament to the university's rich history and growing prominence. Coverage will begin at 1 p.m. CT, followed by a second live SportsCenter segment at 4 p.m. CT, both airing directly from the JSU arena.

Key Takeaway: This event not only showcases Jackson State's athletics but also highlights the university's vibrant culture, legacy, and community, offering a unique opportunity to showcase the rich traditions of HBCUs to a national audience.

Headlining the event is Head Men's Basketball Coach Mo Williams, who will join the broadcast for a live interview. During the show, he will also compete in a free-throw shooting contest with David Dennis Jr., an award-winning senior writer at Andscape and ESPN analyst.

But the broadcast will extend beyond basketball, as ESPN's crew will welcome the Sonic Boom of the South, Jackson State's renowned marching band, along with Dr. Roderick Little, to highlight the university's history, traditions, and cultural influence.

SportsCenter anchor Amina Smith will host both live editions from the campus, blending athletics, culture, and compelling storytelling throughout the day.

"This event is not just about the basketball team or the athletics program - it's about showcasing the rich history, tradition, and community that make Jackson State University and other HBCUs so special."

For the HBCU community, moments like this offer rare opportunities to showcase their programs beyond the confines of wins and losses. Instead, they highlight the cultural legacy, community, and enduring spirit that define the HBCU experience.

Notably, the timing of this event holds added significance, as it opens Black History Month on an HBCU campus. This reflects a broader shift in how major networks are telling the stories of college sports, particularly those rooted in tradition and identity.

Students and fans are invited to attend the event beginning at 12 p.m. CT, with the opportunity to participate in the live broadcast. Following the SportsCenter segments, the spotlight will shift to the court, as Jackson State takes on Southern University at 8 p.m. CT, turning the day into a celebration of HBCU excellence in athletics, culture, and community.

HBCUConnect Perspective: This event at Jackson State University is a remarkable opportunity for the HBCU community to showcase its rich heritage, vibrant culture, and enduring spirit to a national audience. By bringing SportsCenter directly to an HBCU campus, ESPN is amplifying the stories and traditions that have long defined the HBCU experience, celebrating the remarkable achievements and lasting impact of these institutions. This moment serves as a powerful reminder of the invaluable contributions of HBCUs to the broader landscape of higher education and athletics, and the integral role they play in shaping the narratives of Black excellence and community.
