SWAC Basketball Programs Compete for Coaching Talent: Insights from Coaches' Poll

SWAC Basketball Programs Compete for Coaching Talent: Insights from Coaches
Posted By: Will Moss on January 28, 2026

As the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) continues to make its mark on the landscape of HBCU athletics, the anonymous poll conducted by The Field of 68 has shed light on the highly competitive and nuanced nature of coaching positions within the league.

Texas Southern Emerges on Top, but Competition is Fierce

In a tight race, Texas Southern University emerged as the most coveted head coaching job in the SWAC, receiving six first-place votes and accumulating 152 total points. The Tigers' combination of their Houston location, NCAA Tournament history, and institutional ambition have made them a prime destination for coaching talent across the conference.

However, the margin at the top was razor-thin, with Alabama State University finishing a close second with 144 points and Alabama A&M University coming in third with 143 points. The Hornets and Bulldogs both received high praise from their peers, with coaches highlighting factors such as strong resources, genuine institutional support, and a clear investment in athletics.

Key Takeaway: The top tier of SWAC coaching jobs is deeply competitive, with several programs emerging as premier destinations for aspiring coaches.

This speaks to the growing prestige and competitiveness of HBCU basketball programs in the region.

SWAC Coaching Job Rankings

  • Texas Southern – 152 points (6 first-place votes)
  • Alabama State – 144 points (2)
  • Alabama A&M – 143 points (6)

  • Prairie View A&M – 103 (tie)
  • Bethune-Cookman – 86 (1)
  • Florida A&M – 82
  • Arkansas-Pine Bluff – 43

The Significance for the HBCU Community

This coaches' poll not only highlights the competitive landscape of SWAC basketball, but it also underscores the growing importance of HBCU programs in the broader landscape of college sports. As HBCUs continue to attract top-tier talent and resources, the ability to retain and cultivate elite coaching talent becomes increasingly critical.

"This list is a snapshot of how the people inside the profession see the SWAC right now. Location, administration and alumni involvement matters. And in 2026, NIL opportunities, funding, and collectives matter more than ever."

For the HBCU community, this poll serves as a testament to the growing influence and competitiveness of SWAC basketball programs. It highlights the need for continued investment, support, and resources to attract and retain the best coaching talent, which in turn will elevate the overall quality of HBCU sports and inspire the next generation of HBCU student-athletes.
