HBCU Coaching Legends Lead the Way at the Legacy Bowl
|
Posted By: Roger Gates on January 28, 2026 The HBCU Legacy Bowl is set to feature a coaching matchup that highlights the remarkable achievements of leaders within the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) athletic community. This year's staff split into two squads that represent the rich conference rivalries and championship pedigrees of the MEAC, CIAA, SWAC, and SIAC. Team Gaither is led by Chennis Berry of South Carolina State and Maurice Flowers of Johnson C. Smith – two coaches who have a proven track record of delivering championship-caliber seasons for their respective programs. Berry, in particular, has built an impressive resume that includes multiple titles across various levels of competition. Most recently, he guided South Carolina State to consecutive MEAC championships and an unforgettable Celebration Bowl victory over Prairie View A&M in a four-overtime thriller. On the opposing sideline, Team Robinson features two other HBCU coaching luminaries – Tremaine Jackson of Prairie View A&M and Quinn Gray Sr. of Florida A&M. In his first season at the helm, Jackson led Prairie View A&M to a 10-4 campaign and the program's first SWAC title since 2009. Gray, meanwhile, capped off his tenure at Albany State by winning the SIAC championship and posting a 12-2 record in 2025 before accepting the head coaching job at Florida A&M. Key Takeaway: The impressive coaching lineups at the HBCU Legacy Bowl showcase the depth of talent and leadership within the HBCU sports community. These four coaches have achieved remarkable success at the conference and national levels, and their presence on the sidelines will undoubtedly add to the already electric atmosphere of this historic event.
As the HBCU community eagerly anticipates the Legacy Bowl, the matchup of these four championship-caliber coaches is sure to be a highlight. The unique conference rivalries and shared experiences of leading their respective programs to the top of the HBCU landscape will undoubtedly add an extra layer of intensity and intrigue to the proceedings. Fans can expect a sideline battle that is just as captivating as the action on the field. For the HBCU Connect audience, this coaching showcase is a testament to the outstanding leadership and talent that exists within the HBCU athletic community. These coaches have not only found success at the highest levels of their sport, but they have also played a vital role in shaping the next generation of HBCU student-athletes. Their presence at the Legacy Bowl is a celebration of the rich history and bright future of HBCU athletics. Originally reported by HBCU Gameday.
