Today, we shine a spotlight on the North Carolina A&T Aggies men's basketball program, as they navigate a challenging rebuilding phase while upholding the legacy of HBCU excellence. A Storied Past, A Defining Present College basketball doesn't come with a rewind button, and North Carolina A&T is learning that the hard way. The proud men's basketball program, once a powerhouse in the MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference), now finds itself at the bottom of a new league's perception as it works to rebuild. As of January 28th, the Aggies stand at 9-10 overall and 2-6 in CAA (Colonial Athletic Association) play, in their third year under Head Coach Monté Ross. Recently, The Field of 68's anonymous poll of CAA coaches ranked the league's jobs 1-to-13, placing NC A&T last, just behind fellow HBCU Hampton University (46). While the Aggies responded with back-to-back wins, it will take more than a pair of victories to turn the tide. Key Takeaway: The Aggies' current struggles are not just a reflection of their recent on-court performance, but a testament to the program's storied past and the high standards it has set for itself within the HBCU community.
Before the MEAC era, North Carolina A&T had already built a winning identity that shaped multiple eras of Black college basketball. Under the legendary Coach Cal Irvin, the Aggies dominated the CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) in the 1950s and 60s, winning five conference titles and establishing a culture of excellence. This foundation carried over when the MEAC was formed in 1970, a pivotal moment for HBCU athletics as institutions pushed for greater visibility and equity. For much of the 1980s through the mid-2000s, North Carolina A&T stood as North Carolina's lone Division I HBCU, a distinction that impacted the program's recruiting, scheduling, and overall identity. The Aggies' most famous era came under Coach Don Corbett, who built on Irvin's legacy and led the team to seven straight MEAC tournament titles from 1982-88, a streak still tied with Kentucky's record. Corbett's teams were not just "MEAC good" – they were nationally relevant, nearly pulling off an NCAA Tournament upset in 1987-88. "This is the part that makes today's moment feel so jarring. North Carolina A&T's basketball brand was built in an era when it expected to contend for championships as a matter of habit – first under Irvin, then under Corbett, and even into the mid-'90s with NCAA trips in 1994 and 1995." HBCUConnect's Perspective: Embracing the Rebuilding Challenge At HBCUConnect, we understand the significance of North Carolina A&T's current struggles in the context of its rich basketball heritage. The Aggies' program has long been a source of pride for the HBCU community, and their pursuit of excellence has inspired generations of student-athletes and fans alike. While the team's recent performance may not reflect the lofty standards set by Irvin and Corbett, we believe this period of rebuilding presents an opportunity for the Aggies to reconnect with their HBCU roots and reaffirm their commitment to the values that have defined their success. By embracing the challenges they face, the Aggies can forge a new chapter in their storied history, one that will resonate with the HBCU community and inspire future generations of Aggies to reach even greater heights. HBCUConnect stands behind North Carolina A&T as they navigate this transitional phase, and we are confident that with the unwavering support of their alumni, fans, and the HBCU community at large, the Aggies will emerge stronger, more resilient, and ready to reclaim their rightful place among the elite programs in Black college basketball.
