Morgan State Homecoming Showcases the Economic Might of HBCUs

Morgan State Homecoming Showcases the Economic Might of HBCUs
Posted By: Will Moss on January 31, 2026

HBCU Homecomings are legendary for their vibrant culture, electrifying atmospheres, and storied football traditions. But at Morgan State University, the university's annual Homecoming celebration is also proving to be a powerful economic engine for the city of Baltimore.

According to a recent economic impact study commissioned by Morgan State and conducted by Econsult Solutions, Inc., the university's Homecoming Week generated nearly $19 million in economic output for the city. This impressive figure underscores how HBCUs function as crucial economic drivers for their local communities.

Key Takeaway: Morgan State's Homecoming generated over $22 million in regional economic output and nearly $23 million statewide across Maryland, demonstrating the immense financial impact of HBCU traditions and events.

The study found that the influx of tens of thousands of alumni, students, and visitors to Baltimore during Homecoming Week resulted in more than $15 million in direct visitor spending on hotels, restaurants, transportation, retail, and entertainment. This activity supported close to 100 jobs within the city and over 115 jobs statewide, generating nearly $7 million in employee compensation. Furthermore, the Homecoming festivities contributed more than $600,000 in state tax revenue.

Importantly, the economic analysis was conducted by a respected third-party consulting firm, Econsult Solutions, Inc., adding credibility to the findings and strengthening the broader case for investment in HBCU athletics and events.

Homecoming: A Proven Economic Engine for HBCUs

At many HBCUs, athletics—particularly football—serve as the front door to the university, drawing in thousands of passionate alumni and fans. Homecoming weekends combine games, marching bands, alumni reunions, concerts, and community events into a multi-day tourism surge that overwhelms hotels, fills downtown businesses, and injects significant revenue into local economies.

Morgan State's experience mirrors what other major HBCUs have seen, with events like the GHOE (Greatest Homecoming on Earth) at North Carolina A&T State University regularly bringing tens of thousands of visitors to Greensboro.

Homecoming weekends at Howard University, Jackson State University, and Southern University have also become cornerstone events for local economies across the South.

"While every campus is different, the pattern remains consistent: HBCU Homecoming is not a single game—it is a regional event."

Implications for HBCU Athletics

Morgan State's economic impact study reinforces a growing argument within HBCU athletics: these programs generate value well beyond ticket sales and television exposure. Conferences such as the MEAC, CIAA, and SWAC can use data-driven studies like this one to demonstrate their broader economic footprint, especially when negotiating partnerships, sponsorships, and city support.

In an era where college athletics increasingly revolves around return on investment, HBCUs often undersell their worth. Studies like Morgan State's provide concrete evidence that investing in facilities, public safety, marketing, and fan engagement can pay significant dividends for surrounding communities.

Key Takeaway: Morgan State's economic impact study shows that supporting HBCU events is not a subsidy, but rather an economic strategy that can yield substantial returns for cities and communities.

HBCUConnect.com perspective: This study from Morgan State University provides a powerful blueprint for HBCUs across the country to quantify the economic value of their traditions and athletic events. By commissioning and publicizing similar analyses, HBCUs can build a stronger case for increased investment, visibility, and respect within the college sports landscape. Data-driven studies like this one demonstrate that HBCUs are not just cultural anchors, but also critical economic drivers that deliver tangible benefits to their local communities. As the HBCU movement continues to gain momentum, this type of research will be invaluable in securing the resources and recognition that these institutions deserve.
