Tuskegee Coach's Ejection Sparks Controversy, Calls for Improved HBCU Gameday Security Protocols

Tuskegee Coach

ATLANTA, GA — The heated rivalry between Tuskegee University and Morehouse College took an unexpected turn after their recent basketball matchup, as Tuskegee's head coach, Benjy Taylor, was escorted off the court in handcuffs following a post-game incident.

The game itself was a hard-fought battle, with Morehouse ultimately prevailing by a score of 77-69. However, the final moments of the contest quickly grabbed the spotlight, as the traditional post-game handshake line evolved into a tense situation that highlighted the need for improved security protocols at HBCU sporting events.

According to Tuskegee Athletic Director Reginald Ruffin, the incident began when Morehouse football players entered the handshake line, which is a violation of the conference-mandated security procedures. Ruffin explained, "You got to intermingle football players shaking hands with the team. You don't do that... that's a security breach."

Key Takeaway: The post-game handshake line is a sacred tradition in college sports, and HBCU institutions must ensure that these moments remain secure and focused on sportsmanship, not potential confrontations.

When Coach Taylor asked the security officer to remove the football players from the handshake line, the situation quickly escalated.

Ruffin disputed the security officer's account that Taylor was the "aggressor," stating that Taylor simply requested the football players be removed to maintain the proper protocol.

"He asked the security officer, 'Can you please remove them from the line?' That's what he asked the security officer," Ruffin said.

Despite the brief nature of the incident, the HBCU community is now left with questions about crowd control, postgame procedures, and accountability. As two of the top programs in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), Morehouse and Tuskegee have a storied rivalry that often draws heightened emotions from players and fans alike.

This incident serves as a wake-up call for HBCU athletic departments to review their gameday security protocols and ensure that they are equipped to manage the unique dynamics of these passionate rivalries. By prioritizing the safety and sportsmanship of student-athletes, coaches, and spectators, the HBCU community can preserve the rich traditions that make these matchups so special.

HBCUConnect.com's Perspective: The incident between Tuskegee and Morehouse is a troubling reminder that HBCU athletic programs must continue to prioritize the safety and security of their student-athletes and coaches. As the premier online community for HBCU alumni and supporters, HBCUConnect.com calls on all HBCU athletic departments to review their gameday protocols and implement best practices to prevent similar situations from occurring. By maintaining a secure and respectful environment, HBCU sports can continue to showcase the unparalleled passion and camaraderie that make these institutions so special.
