In a thrilling showdown on the hardwood, the Delaware State Hornets men's basketball team ended Maryland Eastern Shore's (UMES) unbeaten start to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) season, securing a hard-fought 65-57 victory over the Fighting Hawks.

The Hornets, who had been mired in a six-game losing streak, came out determined to make their mark on the conference standings. Led by a stellar performance off the bench from Kareem Watson, who scored 14 points, and a crafty display from senior point guard Corey Perkins, who contributed 12 points and 5 assists, the Hornets seized control of the game early on.

Key Takeaway: This victory not only snapped Delaware State's six-game losing streak but also dealt the first conference loss to a UMES team that had been undefeated in MEAC play up to this point.

The turning point came midway through the first half when Ademar Santos knocked down a crucial three-pointer to give the Hornets a lead they would not relinquish. Delaware State stretched their advantage to as many as 16 points (56-40) in the second half, but the resilient Hawks refused to go down without a fight.

UMES mounted a late comeback, led by Michael Teal's three-point play that cut the deficit to just five points (62-57) with 1:14 remaining.

However, the Hornets held their nerve, with Miles Webb sealing the victory with a dunk and a free throw in the final moments.

"This was a huge win for us, not just for the team, but for the entire Delaware State community," said Hornets head coach Stan Waterman. "Our players showed tremendous resilience and determination to take down a conference leader like UMES."

The victory holds significant importance for the HBCU community, as it showcases the competitive spirit and talent within the MEAC conference. Delaware State, a proud HBCU institution, has long been a bastion of excellence in the world of collegiate sports, and this triumph over a formidable UMES squad is a testament to the Hornets' unwavering commitment to success.

HBCUConnect's Perspective: This game epitomizes the rich tradition and competitive fire that burns within the HBCU sports landscape. Delaware State's hard-fought victory not only boosts their own conference standing but also serves as a proud moment for the entire HBCU community. The Hornets' triumph over the previously unbeaten Hawks is a testament to the depth of talent and the unwavering determination that characterizes HBCU athletics. This win will undoubtedly inspire and motivate other HBCU teams to follow in the Hornets' footsteps, further showcasing the excellence and resilience of Historically Black Colleges and Universities on the national stage.
