HBCU Basketball Coach Detained by Georgia Police After Heated Rivalry Game

HBCU Basketball Coach Detained by Georgia Police After Heated Rivalry Game
Posted By: Will Moss on February 01, 2026

ATLANTA, GA - In a shocking incident, Clark Atlanta University men's basketball coach Darrell Walker was briefly detained by Georgia police following a heated rivalry game against Morehouse College on Saturday.

The altercation occurred as the two HBCU teams were leaving the court after a close game that saw the Morehouse Maroon Tigers defeat the Clark Atlanta Panthers 72-68. Eyewitnesses report that an argument broke out between Walker and Morehouse head coach Grady Brewer, which then escalated with the involvement of campus police and local authorities.

Key Takeaway: The incident has raised concerns about the need for better security protocols and sportsmanship training for HBCU basketball programs, especially during intense rivalry games.

According to the police report, Walker was handcuffed and briefly detained on suspicion of disorderly conduct before being released without charges. The Clark Atlanta Panthers are a NCAA Division II team that competes in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), while the Morehouse Maroon Tigers are also a SIAC member.

Both schools have long-standing basketball rivalries dating back decades, and Saturday's matchup was the 102nd meeting between the two Atlanta-based HBCUs.

Tensions often run high during these games, which are heavily anticipated by alumni and fans of the respective institutions.

"I've never seen anything like that in all my years of coaching. It's extremely disappointing and not the kind of behavior we want associated with HBCU basketball."

The incident has sparked outrage and concern within the HBCU community, with many calling for improved security protocols and sportsmanship training to prevent similar situations in the future. HBCUConnect.com will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.

As the premier online destination for HBCU alumni and supporters, HBCUConnect.com believes this incident serves as a wake-up call for the need to foster a culture of respect and professionalism within HBCU athletics. We call on the leadership of both Clark Atlanta University and Morehouse College to address this issue head-on and work together to ensure the safety and positive representation of HBCU student-athletes and coaches.
