Posted By: Will Moss on February 02, 2026

Saturday's SWAC men's basketball action saw Bethune-Cookman extend their lead atop the standings, while several other programs jockeyed for position in this highly competitive conference.

Key Takeaway: The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats continue to lead the SWAC, but the race behind them is tightening as teams like Alabama A&M, Jackson State, and Florida A&M make their moves.

Bethune-Cookman Handles Alabama State

Bethune-Cookman 69, Alabama State 54

The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats extended their lead atop the SWAC standings with a convincing 69-54 victory over the Alabama State Hornets. Jakobi Heady led the Wildcats with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting, while Doctor Bradley added a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. The Wildcats' stifling defense held Alabama State to just 38% shooting, including a dismal 4-of-18 from three-point range.

"Our team played with great energy and focus on the defensive end, which allowed us to create separation and control the game," said Bethune-Cookman head coach Reggie Theus.

Balanced Attacks Propel Contenders

Arkansas-Pine Bluff 78, Mississippi Valley State 70

The Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions earned a crucial road victory, thanks to a balanced scoring effort led by Milhan Charles (22 points, 8 rebounds) and Quion Williams (19 points). The Golden Lions' ability to get to the free-throw line (24-of-34) proved pivotal in securing the win.

Grambling 69, Jackson State 66

In a tightly contested matchup, the Grambling Tigers edged out the Jackson State Tigers behind strong team efforts from Rickey Ballard (15 points) and Antonio Munoz (15 points off the bench).

Jackson State's Daeshun Ruffin erupted for 38 points, but Grambling's balanced scoring and ball movement helped them emerge victorious.

Alcorn State 78, Southern 73

The Alcorn State Braves secured a significant win over the Southern Jaguars, thanks to elite shooting and efficient scoring. Shane Lancaster led the Braves with 22 points, including 4 three-pointers, while the team shot an impressive 57% from the field.

Offense Powers Prairie View A&M Past Texas Southern

Prairie View A&M 85, Texas Southern 78

In a high-scoring affair, the Prairie View A&M Panthers emerged victorious over the Texas Southern Tigers. Tai'Reon Joseph erupted for 31 points, including 5 three-pointers, while Dontae Horne added 23 points and 11 made free throws. The Panthers' ability to generate points from the perimeter and the free-throw line proved crucial in this offensive showcase.

Alabama A&M Remains in Contention

Alabama A&M 72, Florida A&M 65

The Alabama A&M Bulldogs continued their strong season with a 72-65 win over the Florida A&M Rattlers. Koron Davis led the Bulldogs with 22 points, while Kintavious Dozier added 20 points. Alabama A&M's balanced scoring and impressive shooting from three-point range (9 made threes) were key factors in this victory.

HBCUConnect Perspective: The SWAC race is heating up, and this weekend's action showcased the depth and competitiveness of the conference. Bethune-Cookman's continued dominance is impressive, but the chasing pack is closing in, with teams like Alabama A&M, Jackson State, and Florida A&M making their moves. As the season progresses, the SWAC title race promises to be an exciting one, captivating the attention of the entire HBCU community.
