Defending MEAC Champions NCCU Narrowly Defeat Upstart UMES in HBCU Showdown

Defending MEAC Champions NCCU Narrowly Defeat Upstart UMES in HBCU Showdown
Posted By: Will Moss on February 04, 2026

The North Carolina Central University (NCCU) Eagles, the reigning MEAC Conference champions, found themselves in a nail-biting battle against the gritty University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Hawks in a crucial HBCU basketball matchup. In a game that went down to the final possessions, the Eagles emerged victorious with a hard-fought 65-63 win, solidifying their position atop the MEAC standings.

Coming off a lengthy layoff, the Eagles showed some early signs of rust, but they quickly found their rhythm, relying on their trademark defensive pressure, veteran backcourt play, and sheer determination to overcome a determined UMES squad. Head coach LeVelle Moton acknowledged the challenge, emphasizing the unforgiving nature of MEAC conference play.

"It's extremely hard to win in this league. You've got to bring your absolute best every night, because every team presents a different and difficult challenge."

The game was a back-and-forth affair, with six lead changes and physical play in the paint. UMES, led by the dominant performance of forward Zion Obanla (19 points, 15 rebounds), kept the pressure on NCCU throughout the contest. Moton was quick to praise Obanla's effort, noting the difficulties the Eagles faced in containing the transfer from Division II HBCU Claflin University.

Key Takeaway: The MEAC Conference is renowned for its competitive balance and the ability of any team to knock off the top contenders on a given night. NCCU's narrow victory over a determined UMES squad underscores the importance of mental toughness and execution, particularly in the late stages of close games.

Despite the Hawks' persistent push, the Eagles displayed poise and resilience.

Guard Jae' Slack led the way for NCCU with 19 points, including four three-pointers, while point guard Dionte Johnson controlled the tempo, finishing with 18 points, seven assists, and three steals. Johnson's ability to create offense late in the game proved crucial as the Eagles capitalized on UMES' miscues.

While NCCU ultimately prevailed, head coach Moton acknowledged that the team still has work to do, especially in late-game situations. He emphasized that practice can only do so much, and that experiencing the pressure of close games is invaluable for the team's growth and development.

"You can practice late-game situations, but it's nothing like being in them. Tonight was a learning experience for us."

This hard-fought victory carries significant weight for the NCCU Eagles, as they now sit atop the MEAC standings at 4-1. In a conference race where every game is a battle, this gritty HBCU win could prove pivotal come March. However, as coach Moton emphasized, the team must quickly turn their attention to the next challenge, knowing that the path to the MEAC championship is paved with tough, physical, and closely contested battles.

For the HBCU community, this matchup showcases the depth and competitiveness of the MEAC conference, where any team can emerge victorious on a given night. The Eagles' resilience and the Hawks' determined effort are a testament to the passion and talent found within HBCU basketball. As the conference race heats up, all eyes will be on NCCU and their quest to defend their MEAC title, with the HBCU faithful eagerly anticipating the next chapter of this captivating HBCU basketball saga.
