HBCU Hoops Spotlight: Howard Bison Pull Away from Coppin State Eagles

HBCU Hoops Spotlight: Howard Bison Pull Away from Coppin State Eagles
Posted By: Will Moss on February 04, 2026

BALTIMORE – In a hard-fought MEAC battle, the Howard Bison surged past the Coppin State Eagles in the second half to secure a crucial conference victory. Despite a valiant effort from Coppin State's DeMariontay Hall, who led the team with 12 points and 7 rebounds, the Eagles ultimately fell short against their conference rivals.

The game started as a tight contest, with both teams battling for control of the court. Coppin State, currently sitting at 3-21 on the season and 1-6 in the MEAC, came out determined to pull off an upset against the 14-9 Howard Bison, who hold a 4-3 record in league play. The first half saw the teams trading baskets, as they fought to gain the upper hand.

Key Takeaway: The Coppin State Eagles, despite their challenging season, put up a valiant effort against the higher-ranked Howard Bison, showcasing the tenacity and competitive spirit that embodies HBCU basketball.

However, the Bison's superior experience and depth proved to be the difference in the second half. Led by their talented roster, Howard gradually pulled away, capitalizing on their opportunities and playing stifling defense to secure the victory.

The final score of Howard 68, Coppin State 58 reflected the hard-fought nature of the game, with the Bison's perseverance and execution ultimately prevailing.

"Our team showed a lot of heart and determination tonight, but Howard's experience and talent were just too much for us to overcome in the end," said Coppin State head coach Juan Dixon. "We'll learn from this experience and come back even stronger in our next MEAC matchup."

As the HBCU community continues to celebrate the rich traditions and competitive spirit of its basketball programs, this matchup between the Howard Bison and Coppin State Eagles serves as a prime example of the passion and dedication that define HBCU sports. Despite the final outcome, the Coppin State Eagles demonstrated the resilience and grit that are hallmarks of HBCU athletes, inspiring their fellow HBCU supporters and alumni.

HBCUConnect's Perspective: This game showcases the fierce rivalries and intense competition that exist within the MEAC conference, a testament to the enduring excellence of HBCU basketball. While the Coppin State Eagles fell short, their valiant effort against a formidable Howard Bison squad reminds us of the determination and tenacity that HBCU student-athletes bring to the court. These types of hard-fought battles not only provide thrilling entertainment for HBCU fans, but also highlight the undeniable passion and skill of our conference's basketball programs.
