Grambling Quarterback's Spinal Injury Inspires HBCU Community

Grambling Quarterback
Posted By: Will Moss on February 05, 2026

C'zavian Teasett, the starting quarterback for the Grambling State University Tigers, suffered a life-changing spinal cord injury during the recent Las Vegas HBCU Classic against Jackson State University. The nature of the injury was initially kept private by Teasett's family and the university, but the young athlete has now bravely shared the details of his ordeal with the HBCU community.

In a heartfelt GoFundMe post, Teasett explained, "I suffered a spinal cord injury during the Las Vegas HBCU Classic versus Jackson State University. I have been actively participating in inpatient rehab away from home (Louisiana) in an effort to receive the best possible outcome. This incident has been life-changing. However, I am making progress daily."

Teasett, a redshirt sophomore, had transferred to Grambling State from Southern University and was poised to lead the Tigers' offense this season. Prior to the injury, he had completed 95 of 170 passes for 1,065 yards and seven touchdowns. His promising start to the season has now been tragically derailed by this devastating setback.

Key Takeaway: The HBCU community has rallied around Teasett, offering an outpouring of support and love during his recovery.

In his GoFundMe post, Teasett expressed gratitude for the support, saying, "Due to the overwhelming outpouring of love and inquiries on how to assist me throughout my journey, I have established this account. Your contributions will apply towards home modifications, accessible transportation, and future medical necessities."

Teasett's injury is a sobering reminder of the inherent risks and challenges faced by student-athletes, particularly at smaller, underfunded institutions like many HBCUs. The HBCU community has a long history of coming together to support its own, and this moment is no exception.

"C'zavian Teasett's injury has shaken the HBCU sports world, but his resilience and the community's unwavering support in this difficult time are truly inspiring. As we rally behind him, we are reminded of the strength and perseverance that define the HBCU experience."

The road to recovery will be long and arduous for Teasett, but with the HBCU community standing by his side, he will undoubtedly draw strength from their collective embrace. This story serves as a powerful testament to the unbreakable spirit and deep-rooted camaraderie that defines the HBCU experience, even in the face of adversity.
