Morehouse Stands Behind Players, Questions SIAC Handling of Viral Rivalry Incident

Morehouse Stands Behind Players, Questions SIAC Handling of Viral Rivalry Incident
Posted By: Will Moss on February 06, 2026

ATLANTA, GA - The Morehouse College Maroon Tigers have broken their silence regarding the controversial incident that led to the handcuffing of Tuskegee University's head coach Benjy Taylor following their January 31, 2026 rivalry game.

In an internal statement obtained by HBCUConnect.com, Morehouse President F. DuBouis Bowman addressed the campus community, offering the college's perspective on the viral moment that has sparked outrage across the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) community.

Key Takeaway: Morehouse has defended the actions of its students, stating the postgame celebration was within the norms of a competitive HBCU rivalry, while questioning the fairness of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) investigation and penalties.

In the statement, Bowman revealed that Morehouse had issued a direct apology to Coach Taylor on the night of the incident, acknowledging that his detainment "did not reflect the desires" of the institution. While expressing regret over the escalation, the message also stood firm in its support of the Maroon Tigers, with Bowman noting that he did not observe any conduct outside the bounds of a typical HBCU basketball rivalry.

Morehouse leadership also signaled a potential dispute with the SIAC, questioning the fairness of the conference's investigation. The college claimed the SIAC determined responsibility and issued a fine without seeking Morehouse's formal input.

SIAC Penalties and Security Failures

The Morehouse response follows a public announcement by the SIAC, which fined the college an undisclosed amount for security failures during the highly anticipated matchup.

Commissioner Anthony Holloman concluded that Morehouse failed to satisfy Policy 1.9 regarding crowd control and the safe exit of visiting teams, mandating corrective measures to ensure future compliance with safety standards.

The controversy began when Tuskegee head coach Benjy Taylor attempted to intervene during the postgame handshake line. Members of the Morehouse football team reportedly entered the court and intermingled with the basketball players, creating a volatile environment according to Tuskegee officials. Taylor's request for security to remove the non-participants allegedly led to his brief detainment by a campus safety officer.

"The situation has now moved toward the courtroom, as Taylor hired civil rights attorneys Harry Daniels and Gerald Griggs. His legal team described the public handcuffing as a 'disgusting' humiliation of a respected professional."

HBCUConnect Perspective

As the HBCU community continues to debate the optics and implications of this incident, the focus remains on how these two historic institutions will reconcile the situation. HBCUConnect.com applauds Morehouse College for standing behind its students and questioning the SIAC's handling of the matter, which highlights the need for greater transparency and collaboration between HBCU athletic programs and their governing bodies.

This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the passions that fuel HBCU rivalries, and the importance of ensuring that the safety and dignity of student-athletes and coaches are paramount, even in the heat of competition. HBCUConnect.com will continue to monitor this evolving story and advocate for the fair and equitable treatment of all HBCU sports programs.
