RICHMOND, Va. (Feb. 4, 2026) - The Morgan State University women's tennis team, representing one of the most storied Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the nation, took to the courts on Wednesday afternoon for a non-conference matchup against the Virginia Commonwealth (VCU) Rams. In a tightly contested battle, the host Rams ultimately prevailed over the visiting Bears by a final score of 7-0.

Despite the lopsided final tally, the Morgan State players showcased their determination and competitive spirit throughout the match at the Thalhimer Tennis Center. The Bears fought valiantly against their Division I opponent, with several individual matches going down to the wire.

Key Takeaway: While the overall team result did not go the Bears' way, Morgan State's performance demonstrated the depth of talent and competitive drive within the HBCU tennis community.

The Morgan State women's tennis program has a rich history, with the Bears consistently fielding strong teams that compete at a high level against both HBCU and non-HBCU opponents. Led by head coach Dr.

Alicia Jones
, the Bears have established themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), one of the premier athletic conferences for HBCUs.

Despite the setback against VCU, the Morgan State squad remains focused on their upcoming MEAC schedule, where they will have the opportunity to showcase their skills against fellow HBCU programs. The Bears are determined to build on this experience and continue their tradition of excellence on the tennis courts.

"Our team may have come up short today, but I am incredibly proud of the way they competed and represented Morgan State University," said head coach Dr. Alicia Jones. "This is just one match, and we will use this experience to fuel our drive for success in the MEAC and beyond."

As the premier online community for HBCU alumni and supporters, HBCUConnect.com recognizes the significance of this matchup and the ongoing contributions of HBCU athletic programs. While the result may not have been what the Morgan State Bears had hoped for, their spirited performance showcases the deep well of talent and competitive spirit that exists within the HBCU sports landscape. These student-athletes are not only representing their universities on the court but also serving as ambassadors for the rich tradition and legacy of HBCU excellence.
