NCCU Softball Kicks Off 2026 Season at Prestigious NFCA Leadoff Classic

Posted By: Roger Gates on February 07, 2026 DURHAM, N.C. – The North Carolina Central University (NCCU) Eagles softball team is set to open their 2026 campaign with a bang, as they head to the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Clearwater, Florida for a highly-anticipated opening weekend tournament. The Eagles, members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), will take the field against some formidable non-conference opponents, including Pittsburgh and Rutgers. This annual event, hosted by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA), is one of the most prestigious early-season tournaments in Division I softball, drawing top programs from across the country. Key Takeaway: The NCCU Eagles' appearance at the NFCA Leadoff Classic showcases the program's growing reputation and ability to compete with the nation's elite softball teams.
The Eagles' first test will come on Friday at 10 a.m. against the Pittsburgh Panthers, followed by a matchup with the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at 1 p.m. NCCU will then face off against two more tough opponents on Saturday and Sunday, rounding out their five-game slate at the tournament. Leading the way for the Eagles is a talented roster, including standout sophomore Amaya Duffey, who was named the MEAC Rookie of the Year in 2025 after a breakout freshman campaign. Duffey and her teammates will look to make a strong impression against the non-conference foes and set the tone for what they hope will be a successful 2026 season. "We're excited to get the season started and test ourselves against some of the top programs in the country," said NCCU head coach Shonda Burnside. "This is a great opportunity for our team to showcase their skills and compete at the highest level." For the HBCU community, the Eagles' appearance at the NFCA Leadoff Classic is a testament to the growth and competitiveness of softball programs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. As the premier online destination for HBCU alumni and supporters, HBCUConnect.com is thrilled to follow the Eagles' journey and cheer them on as they look to make a statement on the national stage.
