Savannah State Tigers Dominate Voorhees in Season-Opening Doubleheader
Posted By: Will Moss on February 07, 2026

SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Savannah State University Tigers softball team kicked off their 2026 campaign in style, sweeping a doubleheader against the visiting Voorhees College Tigers at the SSU Softball Field on Wednesday afternoon.

In the opening game, the home team came out swinging, posting a 7-1 victory over their HBCU counterparts. Sophomore sensation Jasmine Johnson led the charge, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, triple, and 3 RBIs. Savannah State's ace pitcher, Kyla Davis, tossed a complete game, allowing just 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 8 Voorhees batters.

The Tigers carried that momentum into the second game, clinching the doubleheader sweep with a 5-2 win. Freshman infielder Tierra Williams had a breakout performance, going 2-for-3 with a home run and 3 RBIs. On the mound, sophomore Amber Johnson pitched 6 strong innings, surrendering 2 runs on 6 hits and punching out 7 Voorhees hitters.

Key Takeaway: The Savannah State Tigers made an emphatic statement to open their 2026 season, dominating their HBCU rivals from Voorhees College in both games of the doubleheader.

Savannah State's head coach, Tamika Whitmore, was thrilled with her team's performance, saying, "I'm incredibly proud of how our ladies came out and set the tone for the season.

We played with a lot of energy and focus, and it's great to see our younger players step up and contribute in big ways."

"This was a great way to start the year, and it's a testament to the hard work our team has put in during the offseason. We're excited to build on this momentum and continue representing Savannah State and the HBCU community with pride."

The Savannah State Tigers are members of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), one of the premier HBCU athletic conferences in the nation. With this dominant performance, the Tigers have set the tone for what promises to be an exciting season for the program and the HBCU community as a whole.

As the premier online community for HBCU alumni and supporters, HBCUConnect.com is thrilled to see the Savannah State Tigers get off to such a strong start. This kind of success not only brings pride to the SSU campus and its alumni but also highlights the incredible talent and dedication of HBCU student-athletes across the country. Performances like this serve as a reminder of the rich athletic tradition and competitive spirit that defines the HBCU experience.
