More than just filling a gap in Mazda's lineup, this two-row, wide-body SUV signals the brand's ambitious push upmarket, positioning itself as a compelling alternative to other premium crossovers. Don't let the two-row configuration fool you. The CX-70 is a sizable vehicle, sharing its core architecture and wheelbase with the three-row CX-90. The result is a mid-size SUV with an athletic profile and practicality. The focus on just two rows translates into more passenger accommodation and a cargo hold that offers 10 more cubic feet than its main competitors, blending sporty SUV proportions with premium convenience. Power/Performance: My test vehicle was the potent Turbo S Premium Plus, powered by a 3.3-liter turbocharged inline-six with a 48V mild-hybrid assist. Together, the combination delivers 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, channeled through an eight-speed automatic transmission and Mazda's predictive i-Activ all-wheel-drive system. The driving experience is engaging and confident, cleverly masking the vehicle's size with responsive acceleration and poised handling that lives up to its sporty appearance. The long hood and blacked-out accents on the Turbo S Premium give a performance look, while the interior complements it with supple Nappa leather, ventilated front seats, and a 12.3-inch infotainment display. A 12-speaker Bose Centerpoint audio system and a crisp head-up display enhance the daily experience. Standard safety is comprehensive via the latest i-Activsense suite, featuring Smart Brake Support and Radar Cruise Control with Stop & Go. Pricing/Models: The CX-70 is offered in five trim levels, starting with the Preferred ($43,780) and culminating in the performance-oriented Turbo S Premium Plus ($58,200). Mazda also has plug-in hybrid variants that offer more fuel efficiency. The mild-hybrid Turbo S model achieves EPA estimates of 23 city/28 highway/25 combined mpg, a respectable figure for a vehicle with this level of performance.
