Tragedy Strikes South Carolina State University: HBCU Basketball Games Postponed

Tragedy Strikes South Carolina State University: HBCU Basketball Games Postponed
Posted By: Will Moss on February 14, 2026

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — The Bulldog community at South Carolina State University is once again grappling with a devastating tragedy, as a fatal shooting on the campus has led to the postponement of a highly anticipated MEAC basketball doubleheader. The HBCU world is mourning the loss of two young lives, and the university is rallying to support its students during this difficult time.

The incident occurred around 9:15 p.m. on Thursday, February 12, when gunfire erupted at the Hugine Suites, a student residential area on the Orangeburg campus. The university immediately issued a lockdown, and students were instructed to shelter in place for eight hours as the authorities responded to the scene.

Key Takeaway: The tragic shooting at South Carolina State University is a heartbreaking reminder of the challenges that HBCU communities often face, and the resilience required to overcome them.

The Orangeburg County Coroner identified the two deceased individuals as 19-year-old Henry L. Crittington and 18-year-old Terrell Thomas. Neither of them were active students at the university, but a current student was also shot and is currently receiving medical care.

This is the second fatal shooting to occur on the SC State campus in the past year, and it has many in the HBCU community calling for increased security measures. Following a similar tragedy during the 2025 Homecoming festivities, which claimed the life of 19-year-old Jaliyah Butler, President Alexander Conyers had promised to enhance campus safety with more cameras and controlled entry points.

Sadly, this latest event has reignited concerns about the need for even greater protection for HBCU students.

The impact of this tragedy has reached far beyond the borders of the Orangeburg campus, as the scheduled MEAC basketball doubleheader between SC State and Morgan State has been postponed to allow the Bulldog community time to grieve. The women's game has been moved to Monday, February 16, while the men's game against Morgan State has been rescheduled for Wednesday, February 25.

"Student safety is my top priority," said President Conyers, as he announced the postponement of the games. "We are providing counseling services to all students and staff during this difficult time."

The resilience and strength of the Bulldog community will be tested once again, but their unwavering support for one another is a testament to the spirit that defines HBCU institutions. As the investigation into the shooting continues, the HBCU world stands in solidarity with SC State, offering its thoughts, prayers, and a commitment to ensuring that their students can learn, grow, and thrive in a safe and nurturing environment.

HBCUConnect's Perspective: This tragic event at South Carolina State University is a sobering reminder of the challenges that HBCU communities often face. While HBCUs are renowned for their rich history, academic excellence, and vibrant student life, they are not immune to the broader societal issues of violence and loss. The resilience and unity displayed by the Bulldog community in the face of this tragedy is a testament to the strength of the HBCU spirit, and a call for continued support and advocacy to ensure the safety and well-being of all HBCU students. As the HBCU community rallies around SC State, it is a poignant reminder of the importance of prioritizing campus security and providing the resources necessary to protect the next generation of HBCU leaders and innovators.
