Lady Rams Make HBCU History with Record-Breaking Season

Lady Rams Make HBCU History with Record-Breaking Season
Posted By: Will Moss on February 14, 2026

In a remarkable display of skill and resilience, the Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) Lady Rams women's basketball team has etched their name in the history books of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across the nation.

On Thursday evening, the Lady Rams secured a decisive 55-40 victory over the Claflin Panthers, securing their 21st win of the season - a new program record for the university. This milestone achievement is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and unwavering determination of the players and coaching staff.

Key Takeaway: The Lady Rams' record-breaking season not only highlights their athletic excellence but also the growing prominence of HBCU sports programs, which have long been the backbone of the African American community's sports legacy.

Leading the charge for the Lady Rams was Navaeh Farmer, who recorded her first double-double of the season with an impressive 24 points, 13 rebounds, and 5 steals. Teammates Makayla Waleed (7 points, 7 steals) and Maia Charles (5 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals) also made significant contributions to the team's success.

Despite facing a early deficit, the Lady Rams showcased their resilience and determination, outscoring the Panthers 34-15 in the second half.

Their ability to get to the free-throw line and capitalize on their opportunities proved to be a decisive factor, as they converted 10 of their 12 free throws in the second half.

This victory not only solidifies the Lady Rams' position at the top of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) South Division, but it also serves as a testament to the growing strength and prominence of HBCU sports programs. As the Lady Rams continue their quest for the division title, the HBCU community will undoubtedly rally behind them, recognizing the significance of their historic accomplishments.

"This record-breaking season for the Lady Rams is a true source of pride for the entire HBCU community. It showcases the talent, dedication, and resilience of our student-athletes, who are not only excelling on the court but also representing the rich legacy of HBCU sports. We at HBCUConnect.com are thrilled to celebrate this milestone and look forward to seeing the Lady Rams continue their dominance in the CIAA."

As the Lady Rams prepare to host the Shaw Bears on Saturday, the HBCU community will be watching with bated breath, eager to witness the next chapter in this historic season. With the division title and a potential deep run in the CIAA tournament on the line, the Lady Rams are poised to make even more HBCU history.
