Rams Make HBCU History: WSSU Women's Basketball Dominates Shaw to Set Single-Season Wins Record

Rams Make HBCU History: WSSU Women
Posted By: Will Moss on February 16, 2026

In an impressive display of dominance, the Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) Rams women's basketball team crushed the Shaw University Bears 78-40 on Saturday, setting a new program record for most wins in a regular season.

The Rams' commanding victory not only capped off an undefeated home slate (13-0) but also marked a historic milestone for the Historically Black College and University (HBCU) powerhouse. With the win, WSSU secured 22 regular-season victories, surpassing the previous program record and cementing their position as one of the elite teams in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA).

Leading the Rams' balanced attack was Makayla Waleed, who poured in 18 points, while Kierran Walker added 14 points of her own. As a team, WSSU shot an impressive 40.6% from the field, connecting on 7 of 24 attempts from beyond the arc, and converting 15 of 20 free throws. The Rams also dominated the glass, outrebounding Shaw 38-24, and forced the Bears into 24 turnovers.

Key Takeaway: The WSSU Rams' historic win not only sets a new single-season record but also underscores the immense talent and dominance of HBCU women's basketball programs. As the postseason approaches, the Rams remain firmly atop the CIAA South standings, poised to make a deep run and potentially bring home a championship for their loyal HBCU community.

The Rams wasted no time in setting the tone, jumping out to an early 8-0 lead behind a pair of buckets, including a Walker three-pointer less than three minutes into the game.

Another triple by Walker extended the margin to 15-6, and WSSU carried a 24-13 advantage into the second quarter.

In the second frame, the Rams' pressure defense and fast-paced offense blew the game wide open. Two free throws from Ah'Kiyah Pye pushed the lead to 28-13, and a late floater from Alana Biosse capped a 21-5 run, sending WSSU into the break with a 45-18 cushion.

The Rams continued their relentless onslaught in the third quarter, outscoring the Bears 19-6 to take a commanding 63-24 lead and cruising to the finish.

"This historic win is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our players and coaching staff," said WSSU head coach L'Tona Lamonte. "We're proud to represent the HBCU community and are excited to continue our postseason push."

As the Rams look ahead to the postseason, the significance of this record-breaking performance resonates deeply within the HBCU community. HBCUConnect.com, the premier online destination for HBCU alumni and supporters, celebrates the Rams' achievement as a shining example of the excellence and resilience that embodies HBCU athletics.

The Rams' dominance on the court not only brings pride to the WSSU community but also serves as an inspiration to HBCU student-athletes across the nation, reminding them of the boundless potential that exists within these historic institutions. As the Rams continue their quest for a CIAA championship and beyond, the HBCU community will undoubtedly rally behind them, united in the shared belief that HBCU excellence knows no limits.
