Soaring to New Heights: WSSU Women's Basketball Reigns Supreme in HBCU Basketball

Soaring to New Heights: WSSU Women
Posted By: Will Moss on February 18, 2026

In the vibrant world of HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) basketball, one story has stood out this season like a beacon of inspiration – the remarkable journey of the Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) Lady Rams.

Led by the standout performance of guard Tierra Terry, the Lady Rams have etched their names in the history books, setting a new program record with 22 wins and earning a national ranking of No. 18. As the team prepares to take the court in the upcoming CIAA Tournament, the HBCU community has rallied behind them, showering the Lady Rams with well-deserved recognition and support.

Key Takeaway: The WSSU women's basketball team has not only achieved remarkable success on the court, but they have also captured the hearts and minds of the HBCU community, serving as shining examples of the talent and determination that thrives within these historic institutions.

This past week, the team received a powerful symbol of appreciation: custom WSSU varsity jackets, gifted by the men of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. As the players slipped on these tangible reminders of their hard work and accomplishments, the locker room erupted with joy and pride.

"We believe in our organization that things are earned, not given," said WSSU hall of famer and Omega Psi Phi member Cory Williams. "These young ladies have definitely earned these jackets. They made history at Winston-Salem State, and we wanted to support them by giving them something to wear to the CIAA Tournament."

The Lady Rams' success has been built on a foundation of consistency and dominance. Earlier in the season, they rattled off an impressive 16-game winning streak, another program record.

While that streak eventually came to an end, the team quickly regrouped and has not lost since, showcasing their resilience and ability to rise above adversity.

The WSSU community has rallied behind the Lady Rams, showering them with gifts and support throughout the season. After setting a then-record 12-game winning streak, the team was gifted brand-new shoes by university Chancellor Bonita Brown, a gesture that underscored the deep connection between the campus and this remarkable squad. Just this month, the university community raised over $30,000 in support of the program.

From shoes to jackets to constant community backing, the Lady Rams have been celebrated and embraced by the HBCU world, and rightfully so. As guard Kierran Walker expressed, "It's just reassurance that we're doing well. That people are seeing the work that we're putting in. Like all the time we did in preseason, like it's all showing."

A Season to Remember for the HBCU Community

What makes this season so special for the WSSU Lady Rams is not just the impressive win totals and national ranking, but the joy, unity, and pride they have brought to the HBCU community. With leadership from Tierra Terry, buy-in from the entire roster, and unwavering support from alumni, fraternities, and the university administration, the Lady Rams have built something truly special.

As the team heads into the postseason, one thing is clear: these accolades were not given, they were earned. And the rest of the HBCU world is taking notice, eager to see what this remarkable squad will achieve next.

HBCUConnect's Perspective: The success of the WSSU Lady Rams is a testament to the immense talent and determination that thrives within HBCU institutions. Their historic season not only brings pride to the Winston-Salem State community but also serves as a shining example of the excellence that can be found in HBCU athletics. By showcasing the hard work and achievements of these young student-athletes, the Lady Rams have inspired the entire HBCU community, reminding us all of the transformative power of these institutions and the vital role they play in empowering and elevating Black excellence.
